Project outline
You have decided to organise a celebratory barbeque at a nearby municipal park that has both gas and wood-fired barbeques. There is usually a supply of dry wood there. There are several fixed tables with seats, in the open. There is a small covered gazebo in the park. You will need to set the date, decide on the number of guests, menu and catering arrangements (BYO). You have enlisted several of your friends to assist in the planning and organising of your barbeque. Risk assessment matrix

Description of risk: Fires are one of the most significant risks when using a barbeque. First thing you need is a fire extinguisher. Next you need to know your fire and know how to control it. Every year grills and smokers cause thousands of fires, hundreds of injuries, dozens of deaths and millions of dollars in damage. We need to know how to cut fuel supplies, extinguish fires and call the fire department. Always have one person in charge of the fire at all times, a fire marshal if you will. We should also know something about treating burns. Risk likelihood: Low

Risk impact: Hight
RISK MITIGATION
Preventative recommended actions : –
– Check the wind direction and other weather on site before you start the barbecue. – Arrange for suitable firefighting equipment to be available. – Consider relocating the barbecue if you are concerned about the risk of fire due to the wind direction – Use your barbecue in a clear space.

– Leave the barbecue and charcoal to cool before moving it. – Ash & cinders should be cooled with water before disposal. – Do not place used charcoal in a bin until you are sure it is has cooled completely. – Make sure the barbecue is stable.

Contingent recommended actions: Briefly describe any action that should be
taken – If a fire occurs, don’t try to extinguish the flames if is not safe. Call to Fire station. – Have a fire blanket and water close to hand.
