I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced was written by Nujood Ali with Delphine Minoui. In the true story we encounter several characters but Nujood Ali’s bravery helps her get find the solution she needs to live a peaceful life. The definition of Brave is “Not shrinking from threat, challenge, difficulty, or pain; speaking up for what’s right even if there’s opposition; acting on convictions even is unpopular; includes physical bravery but is not limited to it.

” Nujood inspired a lot of young women through her actions in her story. With her act of Bravery she overcame being sold forced into marriage. In the true story of a ten-year-old girl named Nujood, the story takes place in Yemen. Nujood was a ten-year-old girl , who loved school and drawing. Nujood was ten years old and loved playing with children and drawing with colored pencils.  Nujood was forced by her father to marry a man three times her age, she didn’t get to meet him till the day of the wedding and the contract had been signed. Nujood’s not the only one in this case that is forced into marriage at a young age.

Her mother had also been forced into a marriage at a young age as well.. In Yemen, the men were in charge of completely everything. No one asked Nujood how she felt or if she wanted to get married her father signed her off and married her . Nujood was  confused, and worried because she She didn’t even know how babies were made.

She also didn’t understand what marriage meant. Although Nujood’s husband  Faez had promised not to touch Nujood until after she matured, he raped her that first night and tortured her for a month as she  stated .”I have always obeyed the orders of my father and brothers since forever I have learned to say yes to everything. Today I have decided to say no”(63).  When her husband let her go back and visit Sana’a, Nujood took advantage and ran away to the courthouse and told the judges that she wanted a divorce. When they saw how young she was, the judges couldn’t believe that she was a married. Nujood found support in the court system and from her lawyer who was an advocate of women’s rights called Shada.

Nujood went a battle but won her freedom and was able to return to being a normal child. She became such an inspiration to other abused young girls of Yemen that they felt comfortable discussing about the topic.Despite Nujood’s rough life she shows her act of bravery the start to her new beginning  she thought of marriage as a way to get out of her economic family household problems. Almost two months after their wedding, Nujood escaped her husband’s home and took a taxi to a courthouse in Sana’a, where she hoped to file for divorce. After waiting nearly all day at the courthouse, a considerate judge finally heard Nujood’s story.

Later on that night the judge took her home to his family for the weekend he also had both Nujood’s father and husband arrested. Nujood shows her Courageous bravery by her ability to move forward despite her being on this alone and her father being arrested as quoted,  “The next three days seemed long to me full of tedious things, I spent most of my time at the courthouse hoping for a miracle some unforeseen solution”(84). It shows bravery because  as for a ten year old because having to be away from her family’s home into another home she never lost hope and focused on her actual goal at the end of the day which was the divorce. Nujood finally got her divorce after going through plenty of obstacles and influenced a lot of young females around Yemen which her bravery lead her to go to interviews and be apart of committees inspiring other young girls to speak for rights !Nujood’s bravery helped her get through tough situations such as running away for these reasons Nujood was even more motivated to find her way through a divorce.

But she couldn’t have done it without the help of her Women’s Rights lawyer Shada. Shada was a very independent women with a tough attitude that everyone respected. Shada showed Nujood she was going to be there for her till the end no matter what happens Nujood should not give up. Nujood was so worry throughout the case that it would put harm between her and her family but Shada made sure Nujood got away from the vicious monster called her husband, as Nujood stated her motive to getting away from Faez “The courage to run away I couldn’t bear his meanness anymore I couldn’t”(87). Shada was Nujood’s guardian angel and helped her get back on track to school, even motivated her to look into careers and since nujood was so impacted with shada and how she changed her life she wanted to also become a lawyer on women’s rights to help the young girls of yemen and educate herself on how to read and write .Nujood obtained her freedom by being courageously being brave when it came to running away and filling her own divorce. Nujood had to become selfish and put her self respect before any other person and actually listening to her faith Nujood has proven to the young females around yemen that no matter what age no one should be forced into marriage.

Nujood has been interviewed by the New York Times, CBS News  by several other news reporters due to her bravery and leadership so that she can show other young girls to get up and stand educated. Today Nujood has proven that  Everyday in our life we face challenging moments that only lead us to the end of the tunnel and show how brave we truly are.
