This book in my opinion sheds so much light on the way a man’s mind operates. Let’s take a minute to evaluate the “Men are from Mars, and Women are from Venus” theory. After reading the assignment it didn’t take long for me to make my decision on a book that has been considered highly influential and a reference for many, especially women. “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man” written by Steve Harvey was an excellent read from cover to cover. The title spoke volumes! This novel on relationships, intimacy, and commitment had a section everyone could relate to.
There was so much helpful information on proper communication throughout the entire book; he lets you explore everything from a man’s point of view. From chapter to chapter I found myself sitting in , seeing so much from a new perspective, a man’s perspective and saying to myself ”Wow that really makes sense. ” The purpose of this book is to coach women on how to achieve a solid relationship whether they are dating, engaged or married. Harvey gives specific questions they are vital in foreseeing where the relationship could possibly be headed. For example, “What are your short/long term goals? That question leaves no room for doubt on this person’s drive and where they are in their own life before they try to be a part of yours. He believes men need to be in a certain place in life before they can give a woman a lifetime commitment. He even refers to men that are still playing the field as “Sports Fishers” meaning they catch a fish check it out, play with it for a little while, only to throw it back with no intent of actually taking one home. I thought the analogy was comical and made perfect sense. Now everyone didn’t see the book in a positive light as I did.
There are many naysayers they call this book chauvinistic and extremely egotistical. Their argument is “All men are not alike” and it is a very unfair assumption that all men share the same views just as women don’t. This way of thinking reminds me of Astrology some believe, some don’t, some of it may pertain to you personally, some may not. I say take it for what it is worth, but you have to admit there is some truth throughout it all. Here is another example; one chapter reads “Men Respect Standards, Get Some! ” Now no matter what they say that is a fact, men love a chase!
Once the chase is over the fun is over and that is when games start that men and women love to play. “I can’t call him or her again, I already did, I have to wait two days to call since we just met” etc. The truth is some women and even men are so lost they just believe anything they are told, instead of watching to see who the person really unveils themselves to be because, as we all know time tells all. Women can sit around and have girl talk all day about how they think men think, but they would have better luck actually asking a male friend.
The only issue with that is he may try to spare her feelings, in this book he tells it just the way it is and I respect that so much! I personally have thick skin; however I do know many women wear their hearts on their sleeve only to end up with them broken. If we as women take the advice of the title “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man,” and ask the questions we are many times afraid to hear the real answer to we would save ourselves a ton of heartache. It all boils down to a matter of personal preference some people prefer living in a fairy tale so they won’t ask the questions that can force their make believe world to come crumbling down.
Many times they know the answers, but hearing them aloud make them real and quite honestly that can be too much for some to bear. Throughout all the contradictions the naysayers place focus on, there is a lesson to be learned, now will they take heed is the question? Everyone has heard the quote “Men Are from Mars and Women are from Venus,” this novel supports that theory to the fullest. It’s time wake up Ladies and Gentlemen, if someone is giving you all the signs stop ignoring them, reality is coming whether you are ready or not so you might as well be prepared!
