Albert Einstein, the father of modern physics, is arguably one of most intelligent human beings to have ever existed. Much of what is defined today in science and mathematics can be credited to the physicist. Through his work and contributions such as the theory of relativity and the photoelectric effect, mankind took a giant leap towards becoming more advanced. Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, located in the kingdom of Württemberg within Germany, on March 14, 1879. Although he was born in Ulm, Einstein’s family moved to Munich when he was a year old. The mother of the great physicist, Pauline Einstein, was a Jewish woman who possessed an affinity for the arts. His father, Hermann Einstein, was a salesman and electrochemical engineer. Albert Einstein had one younger sister by two years named Maja Einstein. Einstein’s first baby step into the scientific & mathematical world was when his father showed him a pocket compass. Captivated by how the needle was moved by an unseen force, it intrigued many questions within him. Although Albert Einstein’s family was Jewish, the family did not observe Jewish religious practices so Einstein was enrolled into a Catholic school beginning in 1885. In 1889, Albert Einstein would be introduced to a family friend named Max Talmud Talmey. It was Talmud who pushed Einstein into the scientific world. Talmey originated from a poor Jewish family and was a weekly lunch guest of the Einsteins. At the time, Einstein met him, Talmud was attending medical school in Germany. Talmud gave Einstein numerous scientific books, including the work of that of Aaron Bernstein. In 1895, the Einstein family would relocate from Munich to Pavia, Italy due to financial reasons. Albert Einstein remained behind to complete his studies, but joined them shortly thereafter. Albert graduated from high school at the age of 17 and enrolls at the ETH (the Federal Polytechnic) in Zurich. It was here that Einstein would meet and fall in love with Mileva Maric, with whom he had two children. Einstein and Maric would eventually split and Einstein would later marry his cousin, Elsa Einstein. Albert Einstein graduated from ETH with a degree in physics. While at the polytechnic school he had studied Maxwell’s equations describing the nature of light, and discovered that the speed of light remains the same no matter how fast one moves. This violates Newton’s laws of motion, however, because there is never an absolute velocity in Newton’s theories. This fact led Einstein to formulate the principle of relativity: “the speed of light is a constant in any inertial frame (constantly moving frame).”1905 is often referred to as Einstein’s “miracle year.” Albert Einstein published four papers in the Annalen der Physik, each of which would alter the course of modern physics:1. If light occurs in tiny packets, then it should knock out electrons in a metal in a certain way.2. Analyzing the motion of particles suspended in water, called Brownian motion, he could calculate the size of the jostling atoms and Avogadro’s number.3. This provided the first mechanism to explain the energy source of the Sun and other stars. Einstein’s theory E = mc2 would eventually lead to the development of the atomic bomb. Upon his realization that the formula could be harnessed to develop a weapon, he wrote a letter to the President of the United States during World War II to warn him. This led to the Manhattan Project, which produced the atomic bombs used to end the war in Japan. It can be argued that Einstein was too advanced for his time. Even today, the secrets behind his theories are still being unraveled. Einstein passed away on April 18th, 1955 at the age of 76.
