AP Psychology Free Response Question 1 Behavioral psychologist explains anxiety is caused from observational learning (Myers, 2004). A treatment is based on the tenants of operant conditioning. The theories of operant conditioning state that behavior can be shaped by reinforcement or lack of it (Myers, 2004). The psychodynamic theory, the idea is that anxiety is seen as a symptom of repressed conflicts (Myers, 2004). The treatment for anxiety would be free association (Myers, 2004).
A biological cause of anxiety is an imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain (Upson). A number of medications have been shown to be useful for treating generalized anxiety disorder (Rowa, 2002) Cognitive psychologists think anxiety is caused from a way of thinking negative “automatic thoughts. “(Myers, 2004). A treatment for anxiety would be cognitive-behavioral therapy, which seeks to lessen both cognitive and physical symptoms by changing the way a person thinks about his disorder (Raymond, n. d).
