The world is fast becoming a borderless place. Cultures, races, beliefs and ideologies blend together and interact because of the growing advances in communications. In order to succeed in this world, one needs to be able to adapt to the various cultural differences as well as be able to maintain a certain sense of individual identity. This is the advantage that I feel I can get at this fine academic institution; the training to be competitive in the global economy and at the same time the flexibility to be able to deal with the different cultures in the diverse business world. As such, due to my parents’ education of me, I have developed a strong interest in business aspect as early as my teenage years. From this comes my passion which is my lifelong goal of becoming a successful business woman who is equally concerned with contributing to society.
I am a person always eager to know more and learn more. During my summer vacation, I voluntarily help out in my parents’ fabric company as a clerk. The dialogues between my parents and their clients made me realized that business is not just about money, but the communication with people from different backgrounds; furthermore, it is essential to be knowledgeable with the politics and economy of the world and have to have the long term vision in the field.
In pursuing my dream, I have started reading news since I was a teenager, also, I chose to study commercial subjects when I was in high school. I have learned the fundamental understanding of business, economics and accounting. Due to this basic knowledge, I’ve gotten to understand just how Hong Kong, a commercial mainly city, worked because of my understanding of business.
I have learned from my parents two “laws”: the law of learning and the law of giving. I believe the more you learn the more open you become for learning. I am convinced this University is a great fit for “the law of learning.” That is why I believe that this move is a crucial step for me. My success and my accomplishments here will herald the beginning of the fulfillment of my personal and professional goals. It is said that the one thing that nobody can ever take away from you is your education and that is the one thing that I plan to not only gain for myself but for others as well. I have learned from my parents the critical importance of the law of giving, and I am both attracted and committed to this model of community service, particularly that “students apply business skills to effect social change.”
During my study in senior high school, I got a chance to participate on the “Junior Achievement Company Programme” which is sponsored by Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank of Commercial. Under the guidance of business advisers, my classmates and I formed a mini-corporation and operate a company as much as they would in the real world. I experienced the real process of setting up a firm. I was selected as a vice president and mainly leading the marketing department. At first, we set up our target customers; after that, in order to find out what they are willing to buy, we conducted a survey on street, finally we concluded to sell handmade women accessories. At the end of the project, we had the opportunity to sell our products in the “Company Programme trade Fair”. Finally, our team ended up earning the second highest profit out of twenty teams. My experience with this program made me realize that I have broadened my horizons and acquired a wide range of knowledge which is useful for me and could influence my future directly. It is really an unforgettable experience and a valuable opportunity for me to join the program. After that program, I know how much I am passionate about working in the business field. Furthermore, throughout the whole process of the program; I gained a lot of skills such as leading group mates, making decisions, solving problems and developing entrepreneurial thinking.
Far from it for me to just pursue this for myself but in the larger scheme of things I see myself using my education and training here as a means to help others as well. Putting up my own firm and being a businesswoman will provide me with the financial stability that I need to pursue my other goals in life. I have always wanted to give back to society and I feel that I can do so with this degree. I plan to eventually help charitable institutions and non-profit organizations in the future.
