As an impending graduate (November 2019) from Walden University’s Clinical Mental Health Counselor program, I pledge to serve humanity with the highest ethical standards set forth by the American Counseling Association (2014). Additionally, I devote to self-wellness as to guarantee longevity in the profession. On this day, December 29, 2017, let this document solidify my commitment to the profession of Mental Health Counseling.Counselor Identity StatementI commit to empowering each client by assisting them to see their self-worth and personal strength to overcome life’s obstacles. I will practice with beneficence as defined by Linde and Erford (2018, p. 71). To successfully achieve this goal, I commit myself in three specific ways. Commitment 1I pledge to prioritize continuing education to foster my awareness of new research and theories. Dedicating to continuing education will ensure I am applying the most up to date best practices in the area of counseling. Having a solid understanding of current best practices increases a counselor’s clinical perspective, enhancing the services delivered (Sexton, 1999).Commitment 2I commit to making my health and mental wellness a priority. Cummins, Massey, and Jones (2007, p.35) assert counselors are often “remiss” when caring for their own personal wellness. Recognizing our personal limits and being attentive to one’s self is of the utmost importance to professional longevity. I will ensure I am taking time to rejuvenate on a regular basis as this guarantees my clients are receiving the best services possible.Commitment 3Lastly, I devote myself to upholding the highest of ethical and moral standards while providing services and promoting the profession of counseling. The ACA Code of Ethics (2014) provides in-depth details associated with the ethical practice of counselors. The code is divided into nine areas of focus covering many details associated with obstacles a counselor has potential to encounter. Additionally, I will utilize my colleagues for support when the need arises.Professional DevelopmentAs a veteran Paramedic, I was frequently exposed to patients in the midst of a mental health crisis. I am disappointed in our current systems as I find they are failing those in need. Despite being only one person, I crave to help these people get the assistance they need. The best way I can become involved in the solution is to become a licensed professional and provide mental health counseling services. My desire to become a licensed Mental Health Counselor stems from an innate gift as I am blessed with an air of helping others. My motivation for becoming a counselor is to use my gift to help others improve their lives through a joint partnership. I feel honored and accomplished by participating in a client’s journey of healing. Professional InvolvementIn May of each year, the Iowa Mental Health Counselor Association sponsors an annual educational opportunity for Licensed Counselors. The conference is held in Des Moines, Iowa, which is approximately on hour from my home. An attendee has the potential of obtaining 13 continuing education hours if attending the conference in its entirety. Additionally, it comprises of breakout sessions allowing focused training for those with interest in specialized areas. As a member of the IMHCA, the cost for the two-day conference is $150.00. Furthermore, there is an opportunity for reduced hotel rates. IMHCA offers a student membership of $15.00/year. As a practicing licensed counselor, an annual membership costs $65/year. My intention is to become a member of the Iowa Mental Health Counselors Association and attend this annual conference to maintain knowledge in the area of best practices. Additionally, I intend to become a member of the American Counseling Association (ACA). The ACA offers professional liability insurance as a benefit of membership. Most importantly, it offers members nationwide access to other individuals within the professional community of counseling. The ACA also offers a conference and exposition for continuing education. In 2018, the conference will be held in Atlanta, GA from April 26th to April 29th. My goal would be to attend this conference in the future.Summary
I am very excited to make this proclamation to my new professional devotion. Although I understand there will be academic challenges in the journey ahead, I am prepared to face them and excel. I am honored to join the developing career of Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
