Atomic bombs

ESSAYSomeone once said, “All is fair in love and war” but there are limits in what is acceptable in war. The dropping of the bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Japan was not justified because it was inhumane, unnecessary and a demonstration would have been enough for Japan’s surrender to the U.

S.People believe that  it was so brutal and cruel to drop the bombs on the Japanese cities because it was basically a massacre since a lot of innocent people were killed in war of power and politics. The devastation of these bombs was terrifying and obliterated everything and everyone within the blast radius. The bomb dropped on Hiroshima was called the “Little Boy”. The little boy exploded with energy of about 15 Kilotons of TNT.

It was dropped at the centre of the city and since there are only few hills or mountain to protect the city from the explosion, it destroyed everything in the range of 13 square kilometers. 63% of the buildings were completely obliterated and 92% of the city structures were either destroyed or damaged by the bomb. The death toll in Hiroshima is believed to be about 200,000. While, Nagasaki is geographically hilly and the bomb was not dropped  in the city center. As a result the more residential areas of Nagasaki and the harbour were shielded from the blast but the “Fat Man” still did considerable damage to the environment  and destroyed about 22.7% of the buildings in Nagasaki killing almost 140,000 people.

It released the energy equivalent to 21 kilotons of TNT. The destruction did not end there. The survivors of the blast suffered due to the radiation they got from the bomb. Even today, after so many years, people in those cities suffer from diseases like  leukemia, A-bomb cataracts, and cancers of thyroid, breast, lungs, salivary glands, birth defects, including mental retardation and the disfiguring keloid scars.Secondly, to end the war a demonstration of the atomic bomb would have been enough because no other nation had ever used a bomb that dangerous and deadly ever before. The destruction could have been prevented if U.

S. decided to demonstrate the bomb on Tokyo Bay. That would have been the ideal place for the demonstration because it is a large open space and right beside Tokyo and all of Japan’s leaders. Most of cities in Japan were already destroyed due to conventional bombing and Japan did not want the same to happen to rest of Japan.

If that did not work U.S. could have dropped an Atomic Bomb a bit closer to Tokyo on a less populated city. Even if that was not enough two bombs were not at all required. After U.

S. bombed Hiroshima with the “little boy”, Japan was not given enough time to surrender or make a decision. After the first bomb, the second bomb(Fat Man) was dropped 3 days later. Little boy was dropped on August 6, 1945 and Fat Man was dropped on August 9, 1945. Last and most important, the bomb was totally unnecessary because Japan was about to withdraw or quit the war.

Japan was going through constant bombings by the U.S. Air Force on most of his cities. Many air raids were carried out by U.S.

from June 1944 till August 1945, when the war ended. These air raids caused substantial damage to Japanese cities killing around 241,000 and 900,000 people. The atomic bomb only made it worse. Historical studies of Japan reveal that Japanese were more worried by Soviet Union entering the war and Japan could not fight two countries. And that is a greater reason why Japan surrendered.

At the same time, Japanese islands were being blockaded by the American Navy cutting the supply of food and supplies from other countries. Since japan is an island they were dependant on trades and blocking the island caused significant damage to Japan because they could not get any supplies and could not trade anything to other countries. It is also believed that the dropping of these atomic bombs was racially motivated. Anti-Japanese discrimination was widespread in the U.S. but after the attack on Pearl Harbour U.S.

did not care about that but dropped the A-bombs. Japanese were considered to be less than human. It was more of a discrimination act than an act of war, which led to hundreds and thousands of deaths. The dropping of the atomic bombs can be and is still debated by many historians around the world but the decision of dropping of “Little boy” and “Fat man” on Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively was not justified because it killed a lot of innocent people, was really unneeded and was not the right way to end a war.
