Basalt shown in fig. 2-1 to calculate

Basalt fibre reinforced polymer have been
used in this investigation, produced by GMV company in Nanjing-China.

The resin used in preparing the plates was
Sanyu L-500 with 30 MPa tensile strength, and 10 MPa shear strength.

1.1.1       Material properties:

The mechanical properties of the material were
evaluated experimentally, in order to evaluating the connection behaviour.

1.1.1.1
Tension test

Tensile strength of BFRP pultruded section
was conducted according to ASTM D3039-07, the width of the cutting component is
25mm, the length of the component is 400mm, the thickness is 7 mm, the anchor
length is 100 mm, and the 7mm thick BFRP plates is used for anchoring as shown
in fig. 2-1.

To prevent the anchorage segment slipping
during testing, or failure occurs in the anchorage section, the anchorage BFRP
plate was made with sharp edges, to reduce the front shear stress. Sand
blasting machine is used to clean the surface, wipe with alcohol after
cleaning, and then the Sanyu resin was used to bond the anchorage plates with
the main plate.

Five samples were tested under tension
load. The loading test was carried out by the servo hydraulic fatigue test
machine in Jianye laboratory of Southeast University, fig. 2-2. The maximum
tensile and compressive load of the test machine was 1000kN. Three strain
gauges (3 mm gauge length) were used as shown in fig. 2-1 to calculate elastic
modulus, and two strain gauges in the transverse direction to calculate the
Poisson ratio.

The specimen was placed between the upper
and lower grips of the test machine, the loading rate was 1mm/min, and the
strain data is recorded by TDS, fig. 2-3.This breaks in the stress-strain curve are
the result of the resin cracks and beginning of the debonding between the resin
and the fibres.

Table 2-1 present the results of the
tensile test, ultimate strength, elastic modulus, and Poisson’s ratio were
reported. The failure mode was delamination and
fibres breakage in the gauge length for all specimens as shown in fig. 2-5.
