Thao Nguyen English 101 Mr. Merchant October 19, 2012 Essay #2 Causes and Effects of Gender Inequality Throughout history, countless acts of gender inequality can be identified; the causes of these discriminating accounts can be traced back to different causes. The general morality of the inequity relies on a belief that men are superior to women; because of this idea, women have spent generations suffering under their counterparts. Also, a common expectation is that men tend to be more assertive and absolute because of their biological hormones or instinctive intellect.
Another huge origin is sexual discrimination; even in the world today, many women are viewed by men as just sex objects rather than a real human being with standards and morals; due to carnal ideas, some men can also suffer from a gender stereotype. However it may occur, the main causes of gender differences can be traced back to a belief in male dominance, the biological hormones and intelligence of men and women, and sexual themes. The presumption of male dominance has existed for a lengthy time; in ancient Greece, men ruled the cities while the women had to support the home.
Medieval society, much like Greece, was completely dominated by men; according to Sally Smith’s “Women and Power in the Late Medieval English Village: a reconsideration”, “Women carried out the majority of tasks that took place in the medieval house, such as cooking, cleaning and activities associated with child rearing. ” During this era, men set a list of laws that prohibited women from marrying without their parent’s consent, owning businesses, owning property unless they were widows, and having part in politics. On the other hand, men had all of these privileges. Women have slowly been able to obtain their rights.
In the first half of the twentieth century, there have been few incidents where women got to assume the same roles as men; for example, during World War I, the men of the world went off to war leaving their jobs unoccupied. The only resource for labor that countries could rely on was women; therefore, women were granted jobs that were presumably meant for males. Although they have been given more rights and equality, women still lack fairness in areas such as education, domestic abuse, crime, and lower class value. Cassandra Clifford states in her article “Are Girls still marginalized?
Discrimination and Gender Inequality in Today’s Society”, “Woman and girls are abused by their husbands and fathers, young girls are exploited by sex tourism and trafficking, girls in many countries are forced into arranged marriages at early ages. Twice as many women are illiterate as men, due to the large gap in education, and girls are still less likely to get jobs and excel in the work place than boys. ” She describes some of the issues that women face today around the world. These issues are what keep society from coming together to form a better world.
Today, women have more rights than ever before, but the belief of male has resulted in a never ending convention toward women. This leads to predetermined thought from younger girls that they must become inferior. Clifford states in her article, “Children look first to their own parents for examples and inspiration, therefore when a child see their mother living a life of inequality, the cycle often continues as girls feel there is no alternative for themselves. ” When younger girls see their mother or any woman submitting to the standard, they feel they must do the same.
An effect on men is that they have to live up to the standard of the superior gender; if they do not meet the general criteria, their confidence may be destroyed or they may be ridiculed by other males. There are many times when a man feels inferior to a woman who has a more masculine job or has a better salary. For example, a man who is a nurse may feel inferior to a woman who is an engineer; society has developed a general routine that keeps the man on the top of the profession pyramid. Otherwise, his tenacity will likely be shut down.
From a scientific point of view, men and women have completely different biological hormones and way of thinking; this reasoning also results into the foundation of gender stereotypes which also executes men wanting to live up to a standard that they should do everything required of them such as work, be assertive, and take control of any situation while the women should be quiet and submit to the man’s authority. For example, the majority of men do not like to follow manuals or instructions when building something. Their mindset confirms that they must do everything themselves to grasp a feeling of control and confidence.
Women have grown up to have the sense of insecurity and powerlessness; in “Women and Negative Stereotypes: An End Before a Start”, Divya Bhargava retorts, “Indian girls grow up with deep rooted sense of fear and insecurity which not only restricts their social mobility in the mundane day to day life but also often psychologically cripples them to face the hardships of life in general and resist gender based discrimination in particular. ” Bhargava explains that Indian girls’ have so much terror that is results with their minds becoming too corrupt to cope with the inequity.
Psychological impact can also contribute to a female’s education; Susan Jacoby explains in her essay “When Bright Girls Decide That Math Is “a Waste of Time”, “The real problem is that so many girls eliminate themselves from any serious possibility of studying science as a result of decisions made during the vulnerable period of midadolescence, when they are most likely to be influenced – on both conscious and subconscious levels – by the traditional belief that math and science are “masculine” subjects” (283).
The writer illustrates how the girls at a young age have grown accustomed to male sovereignty which removes a desire to excel in their scholastics. Sexual themes refer to both gender’s inequality from a sexual standpoint; this judgment can range from the stereotypes to sexual desire. Women always wonder why they are often seen only as sex objects rather than a human being with feelings. They are curious why a man is praised by their friends for having so many partners while girls are frowned upon if they did the same thing.
On the other hand, some men have to endure the stereotype from these same women that they are selfish, sex-driven animals. Throughout history these stereotypes have formed because of how men have treated women; even though some men have changed into gentlemen, not all women can recognize this alteration. From an extreme point of view, women have to suffer from the sexual dangers of this cause; in general, there are many cases where women are kidnapped and purged into the world of prostitution against their own will.
Also, women, especially younger girls, are more likely to be the victims of a sexual assault; Clifford states, “According to World Vision, 40-47% of sexual assaults worldwide are committed on girls 15 years old or younger. ” When a person has extreme desires for sex or the feeling of control, the results can be horrifying like this statistic. These sexual themes have existed for so long that it may be impossible to destroy them. In spite of these factors, there is still hope that one day gender inequality can be minimized drastically further; however, it may be nearly impossible to do so.
There have been numerous causes that keep gender inequality alive today; these elements have had thousands of years to develop and engrave themselves in everyone’s minds. The belief of man’s superiority has resulted in predetermined mindsets of men and women. Men’s way of thinking will always be different from a woman’s intellect; from birth, the stereotype is men typically want to be in control of everything while women have a soft-hearted feeling. Sexual motif continue to be a huge factor in the role of gender inequality.
Men have to endure a stereotype because of this idea; women have to show men that there is more to them than just appearance. Also because of his corrupt notion, many women have to suffer from illegal industries. With all of these factors, the world has become a place where no one is really equal; there is a status quo set that needs to be destroyed.
