SHHH! This is America In today’s society information travels at the speed of light, almost unknowing where that information will end up. Most of this will be filtered before it even leaves the gates. If you hear a bleep in a song, if you see a skip in a movie or a black box over a picture, you’ve just been subjected something called censorship. Censorship is the repression of speech or ideas. A removal or editing of pictures articles or stories; considered offensive, harmful, undesirable, or sensitive to a national government or media group as determined by the editor.
In America we have the first amendment, the freedom of speech, in which prevents censorship. That isn’t always the case; the FCC is editing the music of artist, schools are deciding which books are appropriate for students, adults are being denied the original intent of material. Censorship is against every American, it strips us of what our founding father’s promise. Music censorship has always been a heated subject. The FCC and radical organizations claim that some violent lyrics in music are causing children to commit to violent acts and claiming that the children are mimicking what they hear. This couldn’t be farther from the truth.
People who claim this to be the truth are only looking for a scapegoat. They see a problem and shift the blame to music artist. Musicians are exercising their freedom of expression, to tell their story through the art of music, to simply entertain people and make money for it. When society reaches the point were we blame violence on music, we must be in troubled times.
Censoring and blaming music for the actions of a few people just shows that we can’t correct the problem at the source. It’s the individual causing the violence not the music. Writing thoughts and ideas has been a practice of humans ever since the written word. Telling people what they can and cannot read is an invasion of not only the reader’s rights, but the author’s as well. Book censorship in America can easily be seen in our schools.
Classic books as Huck Finn, To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men are some books banned from schools. For using language inappropriate but, for the era they were written in it was acceptable. No book should be banned from our public schools.Instead, be taught why they use the language in them. If a student doesn’t like what the author has to say then that person has the right not to read it. Not only is book banning censorship gone to far but, also a crime we should never see in this country. The only good thing about censorship is that it young children are not exposed to sexually explicit material and profanity without their parental permission. But telling teenagers and young adults who are mature enough to choose what they listen and watch to is absolutely wrong and unjust.
The key word here is choose. Walking through Wal-Mart in their video and music section, almost everything is censored. In their versions songs are “clean” while in the original cursing can be found. Teenagers and adults can decipher on their own. They don’t need the store to do that. We as Americans have the right to choose what we want to listen to, not what a censor thinks you should be exposed to. The freedom of speech is one of the most important rights that we have in Americans.
Our founding fathers knew this and made it our first amendment in our strong constitution. Censorship is a complete denial to this concept that made our county the best in the world. One day we might not have this right, so we need to fight for it and keep censorship away. Everyday there are radical ignorant people out there trying to ban and censor ideas, pictures and stories, these things that you have the right to view in America. Censorship can only hold us back and throw us into darkness of unknowing.
