With juveniles crime becoming more and more common these days, it is hard to come to an understanding that children can commit crimes just like an adult. Even with that sweet innocent child mind. We tend to forget that they are still human and are raised by these individuals who are committing the same crimes or being watched on television and want to reenact it, since it looks fun. Though, the children do not understand that in most cases the law wins.
Even with Juvenile arrests climbing over the years, we still have a soft spot for the juvenile offenders, seeking less harsh punishments and upsetting jail time that in some peoples mind no child should endure. In Madison, Wisconsin juvenile arrests have decreased significantly over the last 9 years. Murder arrests showed the largest percentage drop, falling 71 percent from 78 arrests in 1997 to 23 in 2006, according to the newspaper’s review (DeLong, 2008). These laws are mandated b the FBI to have each state police jurisdiction turn in arrest reporting annually.
Over that span of 9 years every crime that was previous has decreased. Speculations are to as if the police officers are turning in accurate reporting’s or not reporting other offenses that they should be. The drop in juvenile arrests in Wisconsin mirrors a drop in crime nationally starting in the mid-1990s, according to Ken Streit, who studies juvenile crime issues as a clinical associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School (DeLong, 2008).
From the Early 1990’s there was a steady but significant increase in juvenile arrests for drug possession and use, the intent to sell and other charges associated with drugs where it reached its peak in 1997 (See DOJ NCV survey, 2007). The juvenile arrests are not as steady as some would seem, they tend to be up and down depend on certain aspects of the trade and area they live. Rates go down and rates go back up to the hundreds of thousands a year arrests on most common drugs such as Marijuana, cocaine and alcohol. Also, within the years that fluctuate you have ifferent set of juveniles where the other have grown up moved out or went to juvenile corrections or worse. With new stems branching off, it’s always a new adventure with each new group. Different children want to try new and different things and that is where the issues arise. Things become too easily accessible to them and they want more or something else just to say they got it. When we think of juveniles we think of children and most often we think of what is wrong with the parents and what kind of living conditions do they come from and even sometimes it comes up to as what race or ethnicity they are.
Females have a different role in that mix, they are seen to people as juveniles untainted creatures of our future. While sometimes it’s the Males who take most of the blunt of the force due to that the idea is the younger males want to impress the females and have them get them what they need or want. They can also just follow the males and get caught up in the mess though they do not intend on doing any drugs, peer pressure gets the best of them and it turns into a nightmare for the parents and child who now has a track record of criminal behavior.
The minorities are located in more city type areas where in the cities it is more compact and seems to be more accessible to get things such as the drugs and alcohol from third parties or even gang related drug associations. These are the children not look at for their race as much as where they are from and who they are raised by depending on their age stature at the time. Children with large track records are found to have prior adolescents be charged with the same crimes as the child is setting himself up for.
These children see this life and only know this which tends to destroy any future a child has crime free. Theses age groups vary and change over the years when these juveniles grow up and become adults getting mixed in the adult crimes with stricter punishments. Leaving the younger children to step up and reduce their mistakes keep it neutral or make it worse. It is a torch so to speak of how these children are passing on one generation to the next. There will always be jevniles as there will always be adults, to treat them as such is just as important as to not forget what they are capable of no matter the age.
