The key to success is setting goals and boundaries, as well s knowing yourself, your strengths and weaknesses, and not being afraid to ask for help when it is needed. We all set goals and boundaries in our lives, but it’s the kind of goals and boundaries, and the reasons to those goals and boundaries that help lead us to success on an educational and professional level.
“Goals are used to get us from point A to point B; how we get there is another story. Fifth goal is too broad and not defined well, the route we take may get us to point B, but the time it takes to get there may be longer than we want. (Backscattering, 2014). A personal educational goal that I set for myself is better time management. Time management is one of my weaknesses and has been a constant struggle for me, due to a busy schedule and life’s round-a-bouts. This causes stress which makes me make hasty decisions, and by managing my time, De-escalate the stresses of everyday life. To do this, I use a daily planner to try to map out my day and set small goals to accomplish before my night is over.
A career goal that set for myself is to run my own group home through Quality Life Concepts.In order to achieve this goal, need to stay focused, complete my degree, and continue to work on my time management kills. Setting boundaries is another way to achieve my goals. By setting boundaries and maintaining those lines makes it easier to achieve my goal with a clear and defined picture of where want to be and what I want to do, and not allowing outside influences to sway my decisions. Academically, I have learned that the writing process can help advance my education and career by providing a strong foundation to build upon.This process is going to allow me to grow and develop the skills I need to help me achieve my educational and career goals.
According to Shape (1996) “Writing isn’t easy for everyone to do, but give yourself a little chance, and you’ll be writing, too. ” (p. 1). Writing has always been a struggle for me, because it is hard for me to jot down my thoughts on a piece of paper. When I have my train of thought going, I tend to get distracted before writing it down. Taking this course and learning of the writing process, has helped me to better manage this weakness.According to North Central Regional Educational Laboratory (1997), “Writing is a fluid process created by writers as they work. Accomplished writers move back and forth between the stages of the process, both consciously and unconsciously.
Young writers, however, benefit from the structure and security of following the writing process in their writing. In actuality, the writing process is not a highly organized linear process, but rather a continual movement between the different steps of the writing model. The writing process has several steps that have helped me with my writing starting with pre-writing, or brainstorming. This is where have my problem, taking what is on my mind and putting it on paper. Am trying to eliminate what distracts me, so that this step isn’t such a struggle for me.
Once I get past that, the next step to follow is the rough draft. This step is becoming a bit easier for me. Taking my notes and creating a start from the information that I have gathered.
I then can reread the rough draft to make sure it is on point, and that all my information is correct and to the point.I then can share my work with someone different, so that I can fix what I missed the first time around, and possibly gather more information to add. Then I can go back in and add that information and revise and edit my work.
This leads to my finished paper for publishing. My preferred ethical lens is Right and Responsibility. This states that I use my seasoning skills (rationally) to determine my duties, as well as the universal rules that each person should follow (autonomy). Other wards, I think back to what I was taught, and make my decisions based off of personal experiences.
This makes me more aware of the steps to improve my critical thinking skills. Critical thinking is something that you do on a daily basis, whether you realize it or not. Let me explain. There are six steps in the critical thinking process; remembering, understanding applying, analyzing, evaluating and creating. So, it is like this, before you make a decision you go through each of these tepees, probably without even realizing it. You remember what brought you to having to make that decision, then you understand it, you apply what you know to be right or wrong, analyze both scenarios, evaluate the outcomes, and then create your decision.
The decision was made from personal situations, and thinking back to what the outcomes was. Being aware of the critical thinking process, allows me to make less impulsive decisions and take the time to analyze situations before jumping to conclusions. This will be a continuous effort to improve critical thinking skills, but have a good foundation to start on. Academic Integrity is not only important on a university level, but a personal level as well because the work you perform is a representation of the type of person you are.Being able to sort fact from fiction and bias from Nan-bias is a crucial part of academic integrity, knowing the difference between a factual and a bias source keeps everything on a more creditable level. According to Sharkskin (2014) “Plagiarism is a complex and evolving concept. The term plagiarism “is the use of others” published and unpublished ideas or words (or other intellectual property) without attribution or permission and presenting them as new and original ether than derived from an existing source”.
(p. 1). Plagiarism is becoming a more common element in today’s society.People are so driven by the idea of success, they are willing to take credit for work that is not their own.
Due to the evolution of society, people are willing to compromise their integrity and plagiarism work if it gets them to their goal. In summary, in order to achieve SUCCess, both academically and professionally, you have to know your strengths and weaknesses, and have clear goals and boundaries. The writing process, critical thinking, and academic integrity are all crucial skills to develop in order to achieve success.
