Creation of formal non-
agricultural jobs may not happen in the short run as much as job creation in
agriculture which continues to be a major source of employment and livelihood in
SSA and Nigeria. Agricultural education has the potential of solving the
unemployment of the youth through agricultural productivity. Higher education
advances the efficiency in the use of technology and facilitates structural
transformation in from low value chain products to higher value chain products
thus stimulating agricultural transformations.  According to (Nubler, 2013) Educational
attainment levels and the particular mix of skills, knowledge and competence in
the labour force determine the dynamic and pace of structural transformation.

However there is a growing
mismatch between youth aspiration and their perception of farming as a
profession, which translates to developing negative attitudes towards
agriculture as a profession. According to Sanginga, (2015), “even with growing opportunity,
most educated youth find imagined future in farming difficult. The prevailing attitude
of young people is that agriculture is backward, demeaning, especially for
those who have gone through years of education with high hopes and expectation
(CADDP, policy brief 2013).

to Ayanda et al. (2012),
it is expected
that graduates  institutions who studied agriculture
should develop passion
in agriculture and serve as active work force that will replace the aged population thereby improving
agricultural productivity  The
inverse relationship between education attainment  and labour market outcomes .The youth as been
identified as contributing the major resource base for any country who wants to
embark on any meaningful agricultural and rural development projects because
the y can develop skills, knowledge, and attitude that enable them take active
role in the society. However the traditional system of education are outdated
and do not fit current end user needs which are gradually shifting towards problem  solving skills, multi institution  and management capacities, value addition ,
private sector orientation  and market  driven systems. Increasing global challenges
such as climate change, natural resource degradation, decreasing land availability,
low funding and lack of incentives calls for high management skills and
capabilities
