Discovery: Long Shot and World Essay

Discoveries can affect our vision of the world, do you agree? Discovery is when you find or explore different aspects of something you don’t often know about or a lot of. There are many types of different discoveries you can make such as physical, historical, emotional, random, personal and accidental discoveries. “Martin and The Hand Grenade” by John Foulcher, “Looking for Alibrandi” by Melina Marchetta and “Erin Brochovich” directed by Steven Soderberghall all endure the theme discovery in many different forms.

Through these three texts it shoes that discoveries can affect our vision of the world and this is evident to the responder, therefore I do agree that discoveries can affect our vision of the world. In the poem “Martin and The Hang Grenade” by John Foulcher, explores the idea of how discoveries can affect our vision on the world. Martin captures his class mates through a historical discovery on the hand grenade he brings into his history class.

Foulcher is expressing the importance of human life through this poem and shows that violence in nature is similar to violence in humans. Foulcher shows in the poem on how the war and grenade can really give us different visions of the world he discovers that humans don’t always think about how it really is affecting others and themself. This history class filled with young boys shows that each individual boy had their own vision towards the effect this can have on our world.

It shows in this poem that even the class is pretending to be in war thinking it’s a fun game but not realizing how this can actually affect different people and places of this world. “ lifts into the air above the desk trenches” Foulcher shows that Martin indicates he has got his gather’s bleak skills, they discover that it was his bleak skill caused by getting taught and shown to kill by his father. This discovery made really put an effect on how people look at the world, and how people and parents are teaching their children, whether it’s in the correct or incorrect form.

Not only does this poem show the affect it can have on the world by many things discovered such as the boys are showing no interest on the effect a war can really bring to this world through loosing fellow countrymen and other huge effects it go along with it. This poem also shows words spoken through Martin that are not usual words a young boy would say. “ then the spread became too loose to catch a man’s mortality” Martin explains the power of the weapon and showing the bad bits about the grenade and making it sound like it’s cool to kill and urt people with it. After all the boys see how the grenade works and wants to know more about it and t discover more things about war and what it would really feel like to be there. It shoes that the boys are discovering different aspects towards the effect of war and the Grenade has to the world and what it’s all really about. In the poem Martin and there Hand Grenade, many language techniques are shown throughout the interesting and discovering poem.

In the poem it is shown that the way the words are said and what’s said you would never have thought it was a year 10 boys in a history class. The words said such as “to catch a man’s mortality” You would expect someone like martin that age to say to kill a man. By Martin talking he sounds like he wants to be able to be in war and to kill and be involved in it all. By Martin telling us the grenade has limitation it’s showing the good of it, his telling us good things about the grenade and what its power can do.

In the poem there are lots of metaphors such as “small war” Foulcher does not call it a small weapon, the word war makes up picture of explosions, death and destruction. The smallness of the grenade is obvious as each boy hold it although it’s the largeness of the destruction it can horribly cause. The words such as “the class pauses for history” shows the impact the grenade has in bringing up the past, now the history is being relived as opposed to being studied.

The verb “edges” tells us the impression that Martin’s action is precise and careful. When Martin explains about the grenade the word “bristles” is a great word to describe the shiver of fear at the thought of how potentially dangerous the grenade really is. The words that explain the fear in that the grenade’s power is more than they expected it to be. From when Martin says “questions” the word suddenly shows a change in the poem, the class is now involved and wants to know more about the power of the weapon.

We know this because Martin’s answer was “no-it had limited” “power: ten yards” he doesn’t at all show as much emotion through the poem as many people would feel reading it when knowing more about war. The pun on “mine fields” is telling us through the war a live grenade is hurled across mine fields to kill men, but the dead one has the power to affect the minds of the boys who are looking at it and its potential tears the heart ahead. The novel “Looking for Alibrandi” by Melina Marchetta is also a text which shows the effect of our visions of the world throughout the story of Josie’s life.

Josie if from an Italian background and it is also a very strict background. We can discover this through her nonna and the traditions set out in the novel. Josie discovers she deals insecure because she is an outsider, as her mother was born in Australia which meant she wasn’t completely Italian. But then again her nonna was born in Italy so she wasn’t completely Australian. The novel shows that Josie doesn’t all fit into school very well as she discovers that she has no rich father like everyone else did and she just didn’t want to live her life anymore. As much as I hate poison ivy, I want to be in her world” this can affect how girls think about school, it can affect how girls feel and get left out and feel like an outsider to not be accepted into the world or community. This put a huge effect towards the vision of our world as humans should feel like they are accepted into anyone and anything. Josie’s expression her wish to be free she says “I’ll run one day, run for my life. To be free and think for myself not as an Australian and not as an Italian and not as an in-between.

I’ll run to be emancipated” Josie’s wants to be free to make her own decision and she doesn’t want to care about what other are saying. Josie finds out about her father when her mum was telling stories, although Josie doesn’t often take any interest in her father this shows that this discovery is made but at the end a new discovery is made with her father and they become closer and Josie wants to get to know her father better and more. This effects how people can sometimes judge a book by its cover before even reading inside and finding out more and better things about that person or thing.

Josie and her family have “tomato day” and Josie’s attitude towards traction gradually becomes more accustom to her life and she learns to accept it. Josie’s grows to learn and love the traditions and cultures in her family and learns to respect and her family more than ever. U think that this discovery shoes that family is everything to you and you should always love them and love the traditions you have in your background. Melina Marchetta has used a range of language techniques to show the idea of adolesces to the intended responders.

She has used highly descriptive language to drive home the idea of adolesce and to make it stick to the readers mind. This novel was written in first person form, which allows the responder to understand the main characters thoughts, feelings and opinons on the issues which occur through the novel. She has made Josie’s views and thought very clear to the responders. She has done this by using high descriptive language which gives the reader a deep and detailed idea on what Josie is thinking and feeling.

Tone is used in the novel, which is like dealing with issues such as identity, family, sex friend ship, grief and death. The tone is created so that teenagers the same age can understand themselves more and to gain a sense of reality. The film “Erin Brockovich” directed by Steven soderbergh is another text that shows how discoveries can affect our vision of the world. Erin Brockovich played by Julia Roberts is an unemployed single mother of 3 children who after losing a personal injury lawsuit against a doctor in a car accident she was in, she then asks her lawyer for a job.

He then gives her work as a file clerk in his office, and she run flies off and discovers some files on pro bono case involving medical records. Through this discovery, she knew she was about to change many peoples life, they show that each case she discovers and looks into can help the people that it’s affecting. This defiantly has a very big effect on how the world looks, many company’s should already be looking after peoples safety not having to let someone else find out the problem and have to fight for victory.

She later discovers more about this leaking toxic into ground water and went to each house effected by it an explained that the water they were using was causing illness. After seeing the hurt and troubles the effectors were going through she was more determined to win so she could get enough money for then to be treated with their medical problems caused by this leakage. Through this it shows the effects that people have to go through problems and bad health for unassay reason and someone should even have to fight for money or help.

After all the courts they went through they gathered all the evidence and ended up wining 333 million dollars for more than 600 hinkely residents this shows that through discoveries you can find, help and fix many issues. The director uses a lot of things to advantage in this film. He uses different film stocks, camera angles and styles that work really well for the kind of people in the film. Through the movie there are many interesting and good film techniques used. Some of these techniques that are shown are

Camera Shots which is the amount of space that is seen in one shot or frame. Camera shots are used to demonstrate different aspects of a film’s setting, characters and themes, there are several camera shots shown like extreme long shot, long shot, full shot, mid shot, close up and extreme close ups. Theses camera shots help make the movie the movie and make it what it’s trying to tell and show us. Some other techniques shown are camera angles. It is important that you do not confuse camera angles and camera shots.

Camera shots are used to demonstrate different aspects of setting, themes and characters. Some angles are low angle, eye-level angle, high angle and birds eye angles. In conclusion all three texts all relate well to discovery and show us how discoveries can have an effect on the vision of the world. It shows that humans should always respect and love others for who they are and how they are and that to discover new things can be bad but can also be good, sometimes an affect can be bad, but sometimes an effect can be good and change someone’s life.
