Discrimination and harassment is a common problem among women in our society, and  has very negative effects.  The dictionary meaning of discrimination is, “The unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age or sex.” Women who have experienced discrimination or harassment may suffer from mental health issues. For example, when a woman in college was assaulted by her professor, she told one of the other teachers and was told, “forget about it, these things happen in women’s colleges.” This may cause mental health issues such as depression, anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Currently, even walking down the street women are catcalled, assaulted on college campuses, and discriminated against in the workplace.  According to Thinkprogress, one in three women have experienced discrimination.  In 2014, a blog stated that a young girl had a picture of her two male friends hanging in her room, when her uncle told her she needed to take them down, and said she had no value.  Unquestionably, discrimination and harassment have negative effects on women of all ages. The seriousness of discrimination and harassment is so vital because it has so many negative effects.  Historically men have been viewed as more important or powerful.  Women were not allowed to legally vote until the 1920’s. Women could not also own land; they would have to stay home and care for children and tend to house work.  Secondly, our government is almost exclusively men. For example, during the signing of the Declaration Of Independence, there were no women involved with the discussion or signing of it.  Additionally, only 10% of world leaders are women.  In Guyana it may even seem deliberate to minimize the role of women in government, according to Stabroek News.  Due to these and similar historic examples of discrimination towards women we carried on the negative impacts of mental and physical health. The effects of discrimination are damaging to women, so much so, that it leads to serious problems throughout their lives.  Mental and physical health is affected, with signs of depression, anxiety, along with poor eating and workout habits.  Women can also develop PTSD, sleeping problems and insecurities.  NPR’s Illinois women, Molly Mclay, says that after being sexually harassed by a man, she is scared to walk alone, and similar situations induce anxiety.  Another effect is the pay gap/ wage gap issue- the pay gap puts women and families at high risk of poverty. The annual earning difference of men and women is drastic.  A man will make an average of 51,417 while women will make only 45,489.  Women are therefore forced to stretch money as much as possible, which could lead to financial stress.  Undoubtedly, if this continues to happen, more and more women will be diagnosed with health problems and will be forced into poverty. California’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH)  (Bubble Map)California’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) protects women and minorities from discrimination and harassment.  The Californian government started a larger group in 1959, from which the DFEH later broke off in 1980.  Unlike other programs and websites, the DFEH both protects women and provides resources for defending human rights.  Can you imagine being harassed by your male colleagues, or even your boss?  On a whole, the DFEH doesn’t only help women; they support people with disabilities, religious minorities, medical issues and military/ veterans.  In fact, the DFEH website has list that states some of the people they help: “-races, color, -anthesity, nationality, origin, -religion, -age, -gender”.  Some services they provide include help mediating fair interviews and improving working conditions.  In other words the DFEH helps all kinds of people, not just women, with a variety of issues.  Truly, California’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing is strong a solution to fight for women’s rights, stop harassment, and put an end to discrimination. California’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing has helped decrease discrimination and harassment.  This solution is successful because it provides women with a unbiased third party to report such issues to.  According to the DFEH website, “DFEH receives approximately 23,000 complaints annually from the members of the public who allege that they have been a victim of civil right violations.” In other words more than 23,000 people a year are victim of discrimination.  Although the DFEH has been around for 27 years, diminishing discrimination and harassment, they are not helping the issue as much as they possibly could. According to the DFEH, “of the total complaints received by the department, 17,041 complaints were formally filed by DFEH in 2016.” If we subtract the total number of complaints sent in to the DFEH annually (23,000) by the number of complaints that are actually filed annually (17,041) we can see that 5,959 complaints are not filed.  Nevertheless, the DFEH is a useful group and website, supporting lots of help that need help with discrimination and harassment. The DFEH is known for trying to prevent discrimination and harassment.  It currently supports thousands of women everywhere by providing a multitude of resources, such as reading material about employment, housing, and hate violence.  In fact, the DFEH requires that, “All employers must post the description of California’s discrimination protections.  Most also need to display three posters that detail family and pregnancy protections, as well as transgender rights in the workplace.” According to a review on Glassdoor, the DFEH also has a good workplace, “The work is important and the agency has tremendous resources to allow employees to work free from all forms of employment discrimination.  Typically, when discrimination is uncovered, they do the right thing.” Overall, can the DFEH solve the issue of discrimination and sexual harassment? Yes- the DFEH can solve the problem of discrimination and sexual harassment by protecting civil rights and providing help on their website.   National Women’s Law Center (NWLC)/ Tufts (Bubble Map) The National Women’s Law Center (NWLC)/Tufts helps women get justice after they have been discriminated against or sexually harassed.  The NWLC was founded by the Center for Law and Social Policy in 1972, and was first located in Washington D.C.  Unlike other organizations, the NWLC gets justice for women after being sexually assaulted.  Can you imagine knowing your daughter, mother, wife oe other women figure, has been raped or harassed and was not able to get justice for what happened to her? 321,500 people in the USA are victims of rape or sexual assault every year, and 1 in every 6 women have been a victim of rape or attempt of rape.  According to the Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network (RAINN) “females age 16-19 are 4 times more likely than the general populations to be a victim of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault.” Truly the NWLC is important in the fight to stop discrimination, and get justice for women in need. National Women’s Law Center make sure women get justice after they are sexually assaulted, harassed or discriminated against.  Despite their good work, the organization is ineffective to prevent violence and discrimination against women.  While the NWLC receives many requests on the daily basis, they can only represent in matters specific to sex discrimination, which includes harassment, pregnancy, and reproductive decisions.  In other words the NWLC can only help women with those specific issues.  This solution is not effective, for as they try to support victims and provide help on their website, in reality, their website is incredibly difficult to use. Glassdoor’s review of the NWLC website shows that the difficulty level is ‘almost hard’, on a scale of easy, average, and hard.  This can decrease the number of women who have access to the help they need, and deter victims from pursuing justice.  To recap, the NWLC is not the best solution, due to their complicated website and only being able to help a specific group of people. Despite their shortcomings, NWLC is still known for helping women get justice. Throughout their work they have had many successes and helped countless women.  The staff is hardworking, according to a anonymous user on Glassdoor, “Dedicated staff; great environment with driven and passionate women; great reputation.” The NWLC have been getting justice for women from all over the world since 1972.  While the NWLC has done all of this, another anonymous user on Glassdoor stated, “Internships are unpaid; Staff hierarchy is very rigid.” So- can the NWLC really get justice for all women in an accessible way?  No, the NWLC cannot completely help get justice for all women until they address their restrictions and complicated website.DFEH versus NWLC/Tufts (Compare and Contrast) California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) and National Women’s Law Center (NWLC)/ Tufts have many differences and similarities.  One common factor is that they both prohibit harassment and discrimination towards women.  According to the DFEH website “The mission of the DFEH is to protect the people of California from unlawful discrimination.” The NWLC addresses the same mission.  However, one difference is that the DFEH’s main action is enforcing civil rights laws, while the NWLC protects women and brings attention to problems.  On the NWLC website it says “it’s essential that the United States has a diverse, fair and independent judiciary.”  The NWLC/ Tufts help women report harassment and discrimination.  Yet the DFEH prevents discrimination and harassment before it becomes a bigger issue.  Another commonality is that they both are useful and are in the United States. Indeed the DFEH and the NWLC/ Tufts both help women and protect their justice, families, freedom and jobs. In the United States women make anywhere from .80 to .88 cents to the dollar that men make.  As the Institution For Women Policy Research states, “In 2015, female full-time, year-round workers made only 80 cents for every dollar earned by men, a gender wage gap of 20 percent.” Another astonishing fact mentioned on their website is, “Hispanic women will have to wait until 2233 and Black women will wait until 2124 for equal pay.” Actually the NWLC/ Title VII protects women employees and employers, and is helping to solve many problems just like this.  In fact, both the NWLC and the DFEH make the world a better place for many people to work and live.  One very large difference is that NWLC/Tufts provides a clear way to report  harassment or discrimination issues, while the DFEH helps before there is an issue and to keeps issues from happening.  One of the most obvious differences is that the DFEH is based in California, while is NWLC is based in Washington D.C. and Tufts is based in Boston. Certainly both the NWLC and the DFEH are making an impact on the world for the better. 125 countries outlaw domestic violence, 117 outlaw sexual harassment and 187 nations ratified the convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women.  UN Women indicates only “14% of reported rape cases end in convictions of perpetrators.” The NWLC and the DFEH both try to protect women and help families with this sort of issue.  The author of the article called Nations without Domestic Violence Regulations stated “Most cultures claim to have unwritten laws of handling domestic violence and as such the people do not believe there is a need for a law on domestic violence.” One different characteristic between the two is the date of introduction for both organizations; the NWLC started in 1972 with one in each state, whereas the DFEH started with a larger group in 1959 then later broke off in 1980.  A final difference is that the DFEH website includes a list of rights.  In conclusion, both the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) and National Women’s Law Center (NWLC)/ Tufts are both great solutions to tackle the issue of discrimination and harassment towards women, however, research states that the DFEH is proven to be more impactful. Argument Towards Successful SolutionWomen of all ages are discriminated against, sexual assultd and harassed these all cause serious issues that ruin society.  The DFEH is the clear, effective solutions, they get justice and prevent discrimination.  Women and families that negatively affected can suffer from mental and physical health issues and forced into poverty that will create more problems.  First the DFEH can help in stopping discrimination and the negative effects of it by protecting people from discrimination and sexual harassment.  A women in California was told she wasn’t allowed to stay at her AIRBNB because she was Asian, she contacted the DFEH and they made the women pay $5,000 and to personally apologize to the women.  According to The Coronado Times, the DFEH settled a complaint after a women was sexual harassed in the bar she worked at for over 15 months.  In addition the DFEH supports stopping discrimination, assault and harassment by giving resources to help women.  The DFEH has a useful website that has very useful tools that help women get justice.  The DFEH website includes resources such as, poster and brochures.  They also have frequently asked question section.  The DFEH helps women along with their families. They protect them and make sure they get the justice they deserve. While it is true that the DFEH can help many women, others may believe that the NWLC is the better solution to stop discrimination.  The NWLC helps women by helping pass laws that positively affect women.  One cannot deny that women are still dealing with discrimination, assault and harassment.  Although the NWLC has great aspects, the DFEH strongly affects thousands of women and help much more.  In fact reporting the problem using NWLC can help to stop discrimination and the negative effects of it.  The NWLC helps women and families by making it easier to report discrimination and harassment.  A 14 year old was raped by her classmate.  She contacted the NWLC, the NWLC helped her and states, “The fight isn’t over… working to make sure (name)’s case stays on track.” Although the NWLC may have a few good aspects, it also has negative aspects and isn’t the most helpful. Today in Cambodia pregnant women can not take breaks and are pushed to do work that is very unhealthy for a pregnant women.  When researching discrimination, sexual assault, and harassment, it is undeniable that the DFEH is a powerful solution to address the serious effects of it.  If we don’t fight the unjust treatment towards women then society will be destroyed. According to Business Day, a woman worked in investment banking as the only female in her team, a male colleague told her that she was only there to get the men coffee and that she was out of line because she couldn’t take a joke of sexism.  Since the unfair treatment towards vulnerable women is so devastating, it is crucial that we support women to stop the disturbing ways of the people in our world.  Unquestionably, the DFEH is the most impactful way to address discrimination, sexual assault, and harassment towards women. Don’t let our world become a place where women can’t live life as equal human beings.
