I think fair-trade is to benefit the coffee industry. It benefits everyone in the coffee industry from the farmers to the consumers. It’s a benefit because it helps farmers, fair trade is safe for everyone, fair working conditions, fair trade supports communities, fair trade reduces the number of middle men, it has a better outcome for cafes, reduces the number of steps in a commodity chain, is better for the environment Fairtrade helps farmers because the farmer can get a fair price for their coffee and can afford many useful things like health care for their family.
A usual farmer gets paid less than 50cents for their hard work on growing quality coffee beans 50cents will not allow them to support their family money wise. Fair trade makes sure that the farmers can support their family so they can send their children to school for a proper education. They can use that money for their weekly items, like food, toiletries etc… The farmers have a voice in how their workplace is run and who they would like to export coffee beans to.
Fair trade also lets farmers build their own business instead of working for a middle man, and exporting the coffee beans themselves instead of the middlemen and the profits stay in their community and go back to their businesses. Fair trade is safe for everyone because fair trade has farm management systems that make soil fertility and preserve precious ecosystems and limit the use of harmful fertilizers that put the farmer in a dangerous situation. Food is safer for you and for the people who make it. Fair trade offers fair working conditions to provide a safe and healthy working environment for farmers.
Some farmers live in very critical farms where health and safety are ignored usually these critical cases include farmers being poisoned by the chemicals they use on the coffee plants this puts a very huge life risk on the farmers. Importers must be aware of the health and safety conditions of farmers who they purchase coffee beans from. They also have to improve the health and safety in the farmer’s area. This assures everyone that the coffee beans are safe to eat are not harmful to anyone. Fair trade supports communities. In the third world communities are very poor and don’t have enough resources for healthcare, schools and for housing.
Fair trade helps these communities by allowing farmers to invest fair trade money in their communities to improve housing, health care, schooling and many more things that will make their communities better well built. Fair trade reduces the number of middle men. Middlemen always take more profit then those who work hard to make sure the products are good. A middleman usually takes more than 50% of the profit which leaves the farmers close to nothing this isn’t fair right. So fair trade reduces the number of middlemen to allow the farmers have more than they used to get when they had a middlemen.
This is very fair for the farmers and gives them more money. Fair trade has a better outcome for cafes . Most people are now aware of what fair-trade is and what they can do to help out so when someone goes to a cafe that sell fair-trade coffee they are 100% willing on paying extra for a decent fair trade coffee. This promotes the cafe and makes the cafe different from other cafes. Selling fair trade coffee in cafes will not cost the cafes more because the farmer directly exports it to importers, cutting out the middle man who got most of the profit.
Fair trade is to benefit the coffee industry because it reduces the number of steps in a commodity chain. If you see the commodity chain it has around 5 steps until the coffee reaches the consumer the commodity chain goes like this: Farmers to Processors to Importers to Roasters to Cafes/ Supermarkets to Consumers. Fair trade can make this much shorter to: Farmer who does all the processing, importing and roasting to Cafes/ Supermarkets to Consumers. See it is much shorter and simple it has only 3 steps. Fair trade is better for the environment.
Many people now days are very environmental friendly about everything they purchase so to ensure everyone is happy fair trade makes sure farmers become environmentally friendly by making sure farmers use raw materials from sources in their own country. Making sure farmers apply eco friendly practises. Fair trade supports sustainable practises that minimize our environmental footprint. Use production technologies that reduce energy consumption. Fair trade minimizes waste streams of the environment. All packaging are recycled or biodegradable materials.
To conclude I will like to say that I think fair trade is to benefit the coffee industry and everyone who is in the coffee industry from farmers to consumers. It’s a benefit because it helps farmers, fair trade is safe for everyone, fair working conditions, fair trade supports communities, fair trade reduces the number of middle men, it has a better outcome for cafes, reduces the number of steps in a commodity chain, is better for the environment. Those are my reasons and I hope everyone thinks the same as me because the third world relies on us for their expenses so choose right and choose fair trade!
