Mid-Term Project: Green Computing Janiqua Thompson Digital World Mid-Term Project Green Computing In chapter one, it talks about Green computing practice. Green Computing is basically trying to save energy by reducing electricity and environmental waste. I can apply this to how I use my computing practices by listing ways that I can lessen my power usage at home doing my schooling and for people at work. With this I will acknowledge how often I use a printer to print documents as such. I will also express whether or not these gadgets have power savers or have hibernating mode that it goes in to save energy.

Computing equipment draws approximately one-third of the electricity used in a typical office. Computing equipment should be turned off or at least put in a “power saver” mode so it won’t waist electricity when it’s not being used. A lot of light bills are high because people tend to keep things plugged up when they are not using them. For an example, when a person charge their phone they should unplug it because as long as it is still plugged in the wall, it is burning electricity. That goes for televisions, radios and computers. Computers have a sleep mode that can be used to slow down the energy pull of it.

There is a list of electronics that should be put in sleep mode or at least turned off. For instance, monitors, printers, scanners, and powered speakers should be turned off. These types of electronics run high on energy and used about 16 watts of energy even when they are turned off. This is why they should be unplugged when they are not in use. When you decide to turn off a computer system, it is best to make sure that you have a backup data plan so that your information won’t get lost. Even though computers run heavy on energy, it is sometimes best to put it on sleep mode.

Some people may think that a screen saver reduce energy power, it don’t. A guaranteed fact is that when you apply a screen saver to your computer, it puts the monitor in full power mode. It’s best to put your computer in sleep mode because it uses less power and allows you not to shut down your computer whether you have a lab top or desktop computer. Common windows and Apple operating systems have supported these power saving modes. Inside computer systems, it has a window that can allow you to set a time that you can intervene until other apparatuses shut down.

There are different types of computers. There are personal computers, desktop computers, mobile computers, notebook computers and tablet computers. A personal computer has a processor, memory, and multiple inputs, output and storage devices. They may also have communication devices. Personal computers have two particular architectures that are personal. It is the PC and the Apple. Two types of personal computers are desktop computers and notebook computers. A desktop computer is made so that it can fit under a desk or table. The monitor of a desktop is usually tall and narrow like a tower.

It can be a server of a network of a gaming desktop computer as well as a home theater PC. Notebook computers are also known as a laptop because it is designed to fit in your lap. Tablet PCs is like a notebook computer on you can touch the screen with your finger or a digital pen. A type of tablet computer is a convertible tablet which has a keyboard attached to it. This may seem like this is all blank information to the topic of green computing, but computers have a big part in it. With all this said, I am going to list ways that people can green at home as well as work and school.

You can buy an “Energy Star” that is enabling for desktops, laptops, and printers. This device can be used to power down the computer to a low power state when not in use. With an Energy Star, it will help you save energy and run cooler which helps devices last longer. A computing device can also be put into sleep mode in the time it is not being used. This reduces their energy to about an estimate of 60 to 70 percent. It really is not a bad thing to completely shut down a computer or a printer. These gadgets were built to be cut off and then back on.

You can recycle any computing equipment that you are not using that is just taking up energy. There are recycling centers in the community. These centers will take any brands of used computing equipment like desktop computers, laptop computers, notebook computers, monitors, printer’s fax-machines, etc. Another way that you can save energy is if you buy the Smart strip power strip. This strip can sense how much power is being used by your computer. When you shut your computer off and the power strip sense that it is off, it automatically shuts off the peripherals so that they won’t draw an idle current.

When I was at school they way that we would save energy is shutting the computers down at the end of the day. We never unplugged them because that would take too long to have to get the system back up and running. The way that I use my laptop is I put it on the power saver mode. I deem the light on it so that the power won’t burn out fast. When I put it on the charger, I turn it completely off so that it can get a full charge and save energy. I very rarely use a printer because I don’t necessarily have documents that I have to print. The documents that I do for school, I just type them up and summit them online.

Like any other laptop, my laptop has an energy save mode on it. When I am not using it or if I stop using it to do something and it takes a while to get back to it, it will automatically go into sleep mode to save energy. Sometimes even when my laptop is in sleep mode it seems to still burn energy. For an example one time, I left my laptop on and closed it to do nurse my daughter and never went back to it until the next day. When I did go back to it, it only had about 7 percent left in its power, but before then, it was at about 93 percent.
