Jones essay discusses how Hamlet’s sub-conscience played a role in him developing the Oedipus Complex. As said in Jones essay, Hamlet was often concerned and constantly thinking about his mothers actions and where about. Even when King Hamlet told Hamlet to leave Gertrude alone and complete his task of killing King Claudius, Hamlet did quite the opposite. It can be concluded from Jones essay that Hamlet wanted to be with his mother more than he wanted to kill King Claudius. One example from the play is when Hamlet says the following, “Must I remember why she would hang on him as if increase appetite had grown? (Act 2 Scene 3).

Hamlet is talking about how he doesn’t want to reminisce about King Hamlet and his mother Gertrude being together. This dialogue from the play displays Hamlets feelings for both his mother and father. Hamlet feels a strong love for his mother to the point where he doesn’t want to see her with anyone, including her own husband. This was an insult towards King Hamlet and was very well said by Hamlet out of spite and hate. This is also showing feelings of jealousy towards King Hamlet. The Oedipus complex emotions Hamlet had in Gertrude’s old marriage is the same in her new marriage or to a further extent.

Another example of Hamlet showing symptoms of the Oedipus complex is when he is talking to his mother in the queen’s room. During this scene Hamlet unleashed a river of emotions, mostly ones of ignorance. Hamlet speaks his mind to Gertrude. “In the rank sweat of an enseamed bed, stewed in corruption, honeying and making love” (Act 3 scene 4). This line is addressing Gertrude is a sexual way. Hamlet seems to be interrogating or questioning his mother of her sexual actions and feeling with King Claudius. The fact that Hamlet is very interested and emotional about his mother’s sexual life shows signs of the Oedipus complex.

Hamlet is so concerned about his mother’s sexual life which is abnormal for a normal son. In conclusion, William Shakespeare is considered one of the greatest writers of the English language. One literature piece written by Shakespeare is Hamlet. The main character Hamlet is asked by his dead father’s ghost to kill the new king. This somewhat simple task became a very complicated matter for Hamlet. Hamlet suffers from the Oedipus complex based on Jones essay and two examples from the play. Ultimately Hamlet wanted King Claudius dead for Gertrude’s sake, and not King Hamlets.
