Health Information Exchange Essay

Health Information Exchange

Health information exchange (HIE) allows doctors, nurses, pharmacists, other health care providers and patients to appropriately access and securely share a patient’s vital medical information electronically. The HIE helps to improve the speed, quality, safety and cost of patient care and sharing of patient information. By electronically exchanging information, it can be standardized which can make data transferring seamlessly and can be integrated into the patient’s electronic health record (EHR). “The goal of health information exchange is to facilitate access to and retrieval of clinical data to provide safe, timely, efficient, effective, and equitable patient-centered care,” (“What are health”, 2013). Health information exchange organizations (HIOs) provide healthcare facilities with the means to electronically move clinical information between information systems and maintain the meaning of the information being exchanged. “HIOs also provide the infrastructure for secondary use of clinical data for purposes such as public health, clinical, biomedical, and consumer health informatics research as well as the institution and provider quality assessment and improvement,” (“What are health”, 2013). HIOs are regional (RHIOS), and it facilitates the access and exchange for health information in a geographical area. Washington State implemented their HIE program with OneHealthPort, which was designated to serve as the lead HIE organization for the week. OneHealthPort

It provides a connecting point for organized and standardized data to be exchanged. It can help with reducing duplication of services and reduce operational costs, both helps to reduce healthcare costs. HIE is also beneficial to health care professionals and the patients. One important benefit is that it provides a secure location for individual physicians and organizations to exchange and maintain EHRs. It also helps to save costs, which is important involved in healthcare. By being able to share and access patient records providers can spot warning
signs faster, look at treatment already given, and patient history, which helps improve patient care. HIE is also time saving, secure, organized, and streamlined so that healthcare professionals can do more for their patients. It is both beneficial and important to improving the healthcare systems.
