Although the United States is not the only society that places a high regard on being on time, Americans in particular it would seem have been criticized in the past for being a highly time-oriented people, and some other cultures may not place the same level of importance on being punctual as exists in the United States today.
This sense of being tied to a clock may strike some observers from other cultures as being downright psychotic, but the fact remains that the importance of being on time is an enormously important part of the American value system and it would be reasonable to suggest that this will not change. In addition, people who fail to be on time also demonstrate – whether intentionally or not – what may be considered as a callous disregard for other people and their time. According to Wouters (1995), “Today, good manners do not distinguish any longer between ‘the best people’ and ‘other people’; they function to enhance the understanding between all people,” with punctuality representing one of the important components of etiquette in a modern society. Likewise, a recent survey found that punctuality, together with good grammar and – some surprisingly, cleanliness, is veritable hallmarks of good manners today (Kelly, 2006).This point was also made recently by Alexander who notes that, “Punctuality is one of the modest virtues hitherto regarded as good manners” (p. 18). In the United States, then, the importance of punctuality is well established and those who are even a few minutes late for say, a job interview, run the very real risk of losing out to lesser qualified candidates simply because they were unable to find a place to park in time.
Similarly, people who are consistently late will be viewed as unreliable by most employers and also run the risk of losing whatever employment they have managed to secure in the first place.Punctuality is a very important part of military life for several reasons. One reason is that if someone is late for a patrol or convoy that patrol or convoy might leave without that person. Another reason is because it will make whoever your relieving have to stay at work for longer than they are supposed to, tired and sluggish because of that fact, giving a high chance that whatever work that person does would be subpar and not up to standards because of lack of sleep. Punctuality also shows your chain of command that you are serious about your job and are ready and motivated to do said job to the best of your ability.
Nathaniel Emmons once wrote, “I could never think well of a man’s intellectual or moral character, if he was habitually unfaithful to his appointments. ” Being on time is one thing, but being early is completely different. When you’re assigned to be at an appointed place at an appointed time then there is no room for tardiness. Not only is it disrespectful to your co-workers in regards to making them stay later and putting them “under the bus” but also it is an integrity check and denotes your lack of responsibility. When you have a trend of being late none of your co-workers will feel as if they can rely on you. That not only hinders your advancement possibilities in your place of business or workspace, but also deters your available resources as well.
For example, if you were applying to put a promotion package through, and one of your co-workers was also applying for that specific position, it’s inevitable that your co-worker which was also applying for that position will get the promotion if you’re consistently late. Now, I know that we are all humans and as humans are not perfect and we are prone to making mistakes. Many times there are situations where we cannot make it to our appointed place in time, and in that instance, many situations are excusable until you abuse your privilege and your tardiness becomes habitual. An easy alternative that involves little to no repercussions is to make a simple phone call to your immediate supervisor or someone you can rely on to relay the information for you. This is where the integrity and responsibility comes into play hand and hand. If you’re running late and you cannot get in touch with your direct supervisor or his or her assistant, and the only person you can reach is the guy who is regularly late, then how can you possibly trust that he will relay the message of your absence? Punctuality is inevitable everywhere. In business also this is very important.
If you want to be a successful businessman, you have to be very particular in being punctual. The failure to keep up an engagement punctually may mean a setback for his business. If we study the lives of our great men, we find that punctuality was one of the secrets of their success in life.
The necessity of doing our work punctually should be felt more keenly because we live today in a complicated society where each work is dependent on the other. The smooth working of the modern world is due to an increasing recognition of the necessity of doing our work punctually.Punctuality being so important in life, it is necessary for every man to cultivate this habit from the very beginning.
Once we are punctual, our labours will be lightened, our mind disciplined and our life will be much easier and brighter. The measure of any society’s development and progress does not lie in the wealth of which it disposes or the natural resources that it harbors but in the value system to which its citizens subscribe. The most important of these values are a respect for time and as citizens of tomorrow should be instilled in our society. As Charles Simmons so aptly wrote, “Promptitude is not only a duty, but is also a part of good manners; it is favorable to fortune, reputation, influence, and usefulness; a little attention and energy will form the habit, so as to make it easy and delightful.
In conclusion, being punctual in the navy is upholding our core values or HONOR, COURAGE AND COMMITMENT. Without these core values our navy would have no purpose. As in society, as stated above, any core value adds meaning and makes one want to do their job one hundred and ten percent, which makes the mission of the navy run smoothly and effectively.
