Systems Infrastructure: Evolution and Trends.
Information System: An information system is a software
system to capture, transmit, store, retrieve, manipulate, or display
information, thereby supporting people, organizations, or other software
systems (Mit Press).
Systems Infrastructure Evolution: Information systems was
first introduced in 1960’s as accountant management software. This greatly
reduced the human error and thus increasing the productivity. Software
companies then developed Inventory Control System (ICS) for stock management.
By early 1970’s Material Requirement
planning (MRP) is introduced which achieved outstanding advantages like
reducing the inventory process time and increasing of supply efficiency.
Manufacturing Resources Planning
(MRP II) was later developed during 1980’s. The primary focus of this system is
production area but it also covered management areas like engineering, human
resources, project management, logistics etc,.
of ERP: After the success of MRP II, a system
called Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) has been developed. ERP system is
extensively used in the past 50 years. ERP again is classified into Traditional
ERP and ERP II. Traditional ERP deals with the integration of all the basic
modules of the company like production, human resources, quality etc. ERP II is
the evolution from the traditional ERP. ERP II deals with the external
environment i.e. e-business.
transformation of business models in organization led to development of more
systems like Electronic
commerce (B2B and B2C), Customers Relationship Management (CRM), Supply Chain
Optimization (SCM), Supply Relationship Management (SRM), Business Intelligence
Tools (BI), Product Life Management (PLM). ERP II connects the internal system
with other external systems. However we know internal system is managed by
Traditional ERP. Apart from the functional Advances like CRM, SRM, PLM etc,
there are also technical advances like open programming and system

Current Trends in
Information Systems: The current trend in Information Systems is using the Artificial
Intelligence Systems that are used to predict the Business performance. Functional
advances like CRM, HRM, BI etc, are being used for effective communication
between the customers and Organization. Integration of Business Intelligence
into the systems greatly helped users of the system (Mwendwa).
Future trends in Information Systems: Information Systems is being continuously evolving to meet
the needs of organizations. Some functional requirements like product lifecycle
management, data warehousing, knowledge management systems and balanced
scorecard may have advances in their functionality in near future. Cloud
computing will be enhanced for better serving the organization (KHAN).
