Internet Making People Smarter Essay

Internet DOES make people smarter The internet has been around for a while and everyone knows now that the internet has many qualities and disadvantages but depending on the reason of use of the internet it can be educational also informational with quick and easy access to any topic and this can lead to making people smarter. The reason the internet makes people smarter are its easy accessibility, encyclopedia’s (Wikipedia), and the offers of education and educational videos. The internet has always had its critics of is it good or bad. But really is it the internet that is making people smarter or dumber or is it the users.

The people who think the internet makes people stupid are wrong because I can easily name categories of ideas of why the internet improves people’s thoughts and makes people smarter. The internet is accessible to everyone and anyone. When people want to know something or be be more educated on a topic they can just go to the internet. A popular site would be Google, which is a search engine that is trying “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful” (Carr, par. 24) . By making information universal it is letting people be able to access all the topics they want to learn about.

People will read and become educated on topics they want to be more informed about and really dive into the information provided. It is easier and takes less time for a person to receive this information. The internet has really helped Nicholas Carr who wrote the article Is Google Making Us Stupid. “For more than a decade now, I’ve been spending a lot of time online, searching and surfing and sometimes adding to the great databases of the Internet. The web has been a godsend to me as a writer. Research that once required days in the stacks or periodical rooms of libraries can now be done in minutes.

A few Google searches, some quick clicks on hyperlinks, and I’ve got the telltale fact or pithy quote I was after” (para. 2). Being able to finish his work faster is a big accomplishment because of the internet. Carr is now allowed to find the information faster. But with this information with a few clicks with his fingers this may lead to down sides such as, concentration. The concentration of reading and going in depth in an article to find an answer may lack because we can just go online and type our question and the internet will state it quickly and easily without a lot of human effort.

The way we are searching for things are way easier then what they use to be with having to go to a library and reading through books after books. This way is a way we are rerouting our way of thinking. The study shown in LiveScience is that “According to a new survey of 1,021 technology experts and critics, hyperconnectivity is a mixed bag. Fifty-five percent of those surveyed agreed that the Internet has wired the under-35 crowd differently, and that this rewiring is a good thing, stimulating multitasking talent and an ability to find relevant information fast online. (Pappas para. 2) The easier it is to find information the easier it is to learn about the topic searched for. And the fast online access is beneficial because it lets people be able to learn how to multitask. Being able to find the topics we are looking for requires knowledge of how to use an encyclopedia. The internet can be educational with the use of encyclopedias. To find a person’s topic of interest an encyclopedia would be very helpful and a popular one would be Wikipedia. Wikipedia is known as “the most important English reference work in less than 10 years. This was stated by Clay Shirky who wrote the article Does the Internet make you Smarter. The benefits of Wikipedia would be a helpful place to begin research. Just using Wikipedia isn’t a great way to write a paper. There are other sources that could be used. There are credible people that post on Wikipedia and are knowledgeable but there could also be people who publish anonymously on Wikipedia. Wikipedia can be educational but making sure the sources are credible is very important and also double checking anything you find especially when making and argument or strengthening a thesis (Meister, par. ). To be able to use Wikipedia for your research and to back up a thought with supporting data education is needed. The information that Wikipedia can educate you on a topic and make you smarter on that topic it Is just knowing where the source is coming from and to know if it is credible. But, of course not everyone feels the same way about Wikipedia, for example, teachers. When I was in high school all our teachers would tell us that Wikipedia is not a reliable source. We would actually get points dinged from our papers from using Wikipedia. But why?

I realized that Wikipedia does have people who can go on and change information but they have to be certified and are able to be credited for what information they are entering. Wikipedia has now in the 21st century become more reliable as Britannica (Terdiman par. 1). Wikipedia is also a part of the internet that is informational and educational. Another aspect of how the internet can bring you smartness is actually online education. The internet has many great features and one of those is online education. Education online makes it easier for everyone to get an education without even having to leave the house.

People can “attend” a class anytime from anywhere and there aren’t any strict regulations. “Using technology to give students “control of their interactions” has a positive effect on student learning” (Jaschik para. 7). The positive effect is that the students will try harder because more responsibility is in their own hands and have to put effort into the class to really learn. “It gives people greater opportunity for flexibility, for experiential learning, for illustrating things in multiple ways such as visualization” (Jascik para. 13).

This flexibility of learning lets a person be able to open their mind and to absorb information easily because they will want to learn with the flexibility of online education. There is no classroom you have to sit in at a specific time to listen to a professor talk. Online education has assignments and you do those assignment and they need to be handed on by a deadline. You are putting more of your education in your own hands. This responsibility of learning comes also from the internet which lets the internet make people smarter. A visualization of learning can be on the internet using Youtube.

Even though there are a bunch of cat videos on the Youtube there are also educational ones. Personally I have used YouTube for education such as dissection of a rat or cat for my Anatomy class. It gives another view on learning and a visualization on how to do things. Also there are lectures online that might be over the concept that you are confused about and the video would tell you in a different perspective. People using Youtube can also share videos to people that will let others learn. There are all kinds of educational videos which include how-to videos such as, cooking and fixing cars.

Youtube is part of the internet and is a website that is visited frequently and brings a lot of education which provides smartness, depending on how you use Youtube. There are people that go to Youtube just to see cat or baby videos, even Honey Boo Boo. Even teachers are starting to use Youtube in their lectures. It changes up how the teaching styles are and makes students more engaged when there is something new. Same reason people put images on slide shows. When there are pictures on slide shows then people are going to be even more attracted to slide and want to read it but when there is just words it’s less appealing.

The videos that are demonstrating to what the students may be learning are more engaging and will give another way of teaching that. There actually has been a rise of educational videos on the internet for people to view. “The growth of educational videos on YouTube runs concurrent with broader trends in educational video viewership, which rose from 22% to 38% between 2007 and 2009 (Purcell, 2010). Those who seek educational video have numerous places to look for content, including websites created specifically for the purpose of disseminating educational video. (Snelson para. 2) It shows that more people are going to go on the internet to watch something rather than going to read it in a book. The internet has many advantages to offer the users which include Youtube. The internet has a big controversial argument over whether or not is the internet making people smarter or dumber. In all thoughts the internet is black and white on this subject. To the people that believes that the internet is distracting and noneducational and basically a waste of time. You are wrong and I have proven to you that the internet does have advantages.

Depending on how people use the internet it can make people smarter by searching for scholarly articles, using you resources such as, encyclopedia’s (Wikipedia), and the offers of education and educational videos. Or the internet can make people dumber if they are using the internet poorly by searching for those Youtube cat videos. Making sure to use the internet the right way will lead to making people smarter.
