You’re Drop Dead Gorgeous A few well-chosen words elicit smiles, inspire happiness, transform moods, and turn a bad day Into a good one. Philosopher William James once said, “The deepest principle in human nature is the Desire to be appreciated” These days too many people go about their lives in complete misery not knowing that the answer to a better life is as easy as a compliment. This presentation is meant to explain the process of giving a complement.
By giving complements you feel good about yourself because you made someone else feel good and they appreciated it. By getting a complement you feel good because Someone else told you they like something about you that you wanted people to notice. In this report I had to come up with a system of getting honest reactions out of people. I noticed that I couldn’t just go up to people and ask if I could give them a compliment I had to surprise them with it. I took them by surprise and gauged their reaction to the compliment. I then proceed to ask them what is their reaction, how did the compliment make the person feel, how was the compliment taken, did it boost their self esteem, and how would they react if a member of the opposite sex gave them the same compliment.
Here in the good ole US of A we have compliment day which is a national holiday (though not a Bank holiday) and it is commemorated on 24th of every year. This is a day to give complements at any given opportunity to any given person you meet in your day. It is also a day to receive complements as well and to use those compliments to better yourself and to feel better about yourself. Mark Twain once said that he could “live off of a good complement for two months.” A complement can do many things to a person. It can boost their self-esteem, make them more positive in their outlook on life, it can build on a friendship or start a brand new one.
A compliment can be the difference between being a bachelor or being happily married as most romantic relationships start with a compliment (you have beautiful eyes, great smile, pretty hair etc…). Compliments can be used to convey messages that are neutral. Victor Hugo stated that “Whenever a man’s friends begin to compliment him about looking young, you can be sure they think he Is growing old.” When a woman says to her husband “the yard looks great honey but…” or a Teacher Says to a student “yea good job on that but…” A compliment can convey other messages as well such as jeolosy (oh your dress is so pretty…) or sarcasm( dude nice shirt…) or even anger( oh yea you are such a Great person, the next friggin Gandhi). But it is best used to inspire positive feeling. Most people don’t realize the power of a compliment. For example imagine if before he became
The chancellor of Germany if every day Adolf Hitler received a complement from a Jew chances are WW2 Would not have happened. By giving a complement we can turn a day that’s going really bad for Someone else into a good day. The powerful emotion on the planet is happiness. We fight wars to Protect our happiness and to liberate others so that they may find happiness. We have the right in America to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We dedicate our lives to building what we have and who we are all so we can be happy. And since happiness starts with a smile and a smile is usually Inspired by a compliment. So in essence compliments are often the root of happiness. Now here are the questions I asked each person and the compliments I gave them. 1. What is their reaction to the compliment?
2. How did the compliment make the person feel?
3. How was the compliment taken?
4 Did it boost your self-esteem?
5. How would they react to a member of the opposite sex giving them the same compliment?
