Intro to Critical Writing Essay

However, “Mother to Son” varies from “Love song of Alfred Prufrock” in which the role of the speakers have very different haracters and meaning they are trying to convey. Both poems show us inside the characters of the two very different speakers. For starters, the speaker in “Mother to Son” is so confident in this rough world she lives in. She lets us in that she has had a very rough life, numerously saying, “Life for me aint been no crystal stair. ” The way she addresses her son so honestly, letting him know that life isn’t a joke, it’s tough and rough, yet never give up lets us in on her character.

She is confident and hardworking, and willing to provide and do anything for her son. We know this because she ells him to never give up, “So boy, don’t you turn back. ” Her confidence shines in the fact that she says, “And sometimes gain’ in the dark Where there ain’t been no light. ” This mindset of going on even through the dark gives us the idea that she is a tough determined mother. Although her lack of Education that shows in her English and pronunciation she is still a complex character that has a specific place in this world and that is to provide a better life for her son.

Different from the confident hard working mother, is a man of insecurities who seems to be going through the motions of life, without seeming to enjoy t. Alfred Prufrock is a man with little confidence, even saying, “l am no Prince Hamlet. ” He continues to let us know how fine of a dresser he is, however what seems like a compliment or positive statement ends with a negative statement, for this instance it’s that his body is not up to par with his clothes. They will say: “How his hair is growing thin! ] My morning coat, my collar mounting firmly to the chin, My necktie rich and modest, but asserted by a simple pin” [They will say: ‘But how his arms and legs are thin! “] Alfred continues to knock himself down in this world, unlike “Mother to Son” hich is uplifting to say the least. He talks of walking down a beach listening to Mermaids sing, something that could be such a great picture painted and use Of imagery, yet he ends it with “l do not think that they will sing to me. These two characters paint a picture of who they are inside. For “Mother to Son” the poems theme is never giving up and that life is tough. We see a mother who states her life has never been a crystal stair. Meaning, life has never been an easy climb. Through her message to her son, we can infer that she is a strong woman who only wants what is best for her son. This characters character is one of admiration, even though her life may not be the best; she’s got the right mind frame and work ethic.

Compared to “Mother to Son”, Alfred prufrock’s character makes the readers feel a sort of sympathy for him, he is such a down on his luck man longing for love, yet too mundane and afraid to act upon his urges. He is very self-conscious of his looks, often commenting on his balding head. This feeling of sympathy can only last so long before the reader grows annoyed with his lack of confidence and constant let downs after what seems to be a positive oment. These two dramatic monologues have such strong characters whose voices vary drastically.

The differences between the two are very noticeable. Throughout my argument, I have pointed out that the tone and voice each character has is completely opposite. Although both characters in “Mother to Son” and “Love Song of Alfred J. prufrock” are dynamic and strong characters, one shows weakness throughout and one doesn’t let weakness hold her down. The role that these characters play helps us to paint a better picture of their lives and what the authors felt were necessary to get their oints across.

We know that “Mother to Son” is an uplifting poem in which we draw from the Mother characters words to her young son. Also, we know that in “Love Song of Alfred J. Prufrock” it is an insecure poem from the perspective of an insecure sad man going through the motions of life alone. These pieces of work could not be any more different. However, no matter the differences they both let us into the lives of these two characters furthermore teaching us that the role and voice of the speaker truly drives the piece Of work and makes it what it is.
