Jordan PacilioComputing Innovation: Facial Recognition2A. My computing innovation is facial recognition. The function of facial recognition is to “identify an individual by comparing live capture or digital image data with the stored record for that person.” (Source 6) The purpose it is being used for in today’s society is mostly for secure financial transactions on smartphones, identifying potential criminals, advertisements, and even for entertainment with things like Animoji on the iPhone X as shown in my artifact. My artifact shows the innovations intended function in the bottom middle picture showing the nodal points that make up the faceprint that is stored as data.2B. In order to create my beautiful artifact I used a website called Canva.com. I chose one of their many templates and searched images of facial recognition. After saving a few I felt were appropriate I put them onto the template and adjusted the size of them. I also changed the text to say Facial Recognition to display what i was trying to illustrate. Then, I saved the file as a PDF and uploaded it into the portfolio.2C. A beneficial effect of facial recognition on society is people may feel safer- “For now, I believe, it is here to stay as it improves the flow of people’s lives and has the potential to silently protect individuals.” (Source 4) Knowing that if someone commits a crime they can be easily identified and prosecuted gives people a good feeling of security. This will bring together society as a whole to make people trust one another because “The Man” is always looking over their shoulder. On the flip side, a harmful effect of facial recognition on society is business’ will exploit people to get a better target audience for their product. This article explains this happening in real time- “electronic billboards in restaurants and shopping precincts that utilize advanced facial recognition techniques to not only provide personalized advertisements but also measure and record the consumer and their response, ostensibly to enable retailers to provide more targeted marketing and services.” (Source 5) With this happening people in today’s society will feel as though they are always being watched and it will cause a tension between business’ and their consumers, ultimately resulting in consumer anxiety and reduced consumer spending impacting not only the society, but also the economy.2D. The data my innovation uses is something called faceprints. This article explains it well, it states “such systems identify 80 nodal points on a human face”(Source 6) the nodal points are the basis for the data. The system uses a digital image of a person’s face to obtain the nodal points that make up the faceprint that is stored in the system for future reference. A data privacy concern that facial recognition may have is if the wrong person has the data of the nodal points of many people then they can use the information to exploit the people. A good example of this is many people use facial recognition to unlock their banking applications, if someone had their faceprint then they could potentially log into their bank account and take their money.2E.
