LCDs have been considered as
an approach for weight loss since at least 1860; However, until the early 1900s
did this diet was noticed to be a treatment for obese individual. Four decades
later, various randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and systematic reviews recently
support a crucial assessment of LCDs’ safety and effectiveness for weight
reduction (Timothy David Noakes & Johann Windt, 2016). Some studies
suggested that the huge amount of energy usage from protein in LCDs is an
expensive process promoting the increase in weight loss (Christophe Kosinski
& Francois R. Jornayvaz, 2017). According to Plos One (2014), Celeste E.
Naude et al. conducted a review involving
19 RCTs with 3209 participant, which recorded little or even no difference in weight changes
between LCDs and balanced diets. In practical, those participants from all
two groups, after 3-6 months, and 1-2 years
of follow-up, witnessed nearly no difference in weight loss and Blood mass
index (BMI). In the next year, Feinman gave an example in Nutrition (2015) in
order to assert that “no dietary intervention is better than carbohydrate restriction
for weight loss”. This study randomly divided 26 people into 2 groups following
either low carbohydrate diet or “healthy-eating” diet (calorie restricted diet,
low-fat diet). After 3 months, the low carb group lost 6.9kg while the “healthy
eating” diet helped them to reduce only 2.1kg. Heather Fields, MD et al. in the
Journal of the American Osteopathic Association (2016), however, brought an
overview of the impact of LCDs to weight reduction. As provided by Heather
Fields, MD, compared with the low-fat diets in the first 6 months, LCDs have
greater effect on the weight loss, but after 12 months, LCDs and LFDs recorded
the comparable results of 3.1kg weight loss. Therefore, they indicated that
LCDs may be considered as an effective and faster diet at the short term period
(3-6 months), while there is no difference in the result in greater long-term
weight loss between LCDs and LFDs. In addition, VLCKDs was supposed to be more efficient
than moderate LCDs, which may affect greatly the weight loss results.
