Learning is a life-long journey.  It is about struggle, exploration and
discovery.  It is exciting, amazing and
awe inspiring.  Rather than being partial
to any single pedagogy, I utilize an eclectic approach to teaching.  I am always searching for new and more
effective ideas to inspire and challenge a diverse community of learners.  I believe that first and foremost, children
must possess a love of learning.  If this
is present, they will be excited about their education, and take ownership of
it.  Another goal in my teaching is to
create life-long learners.  My desire is
for my students to always be reaching, searching, reading and discovering.  I also believe that creating a classroom
which radiates a nurturing, vibrant, loving and respectful atmosphere is
essential for learning.  This is
important not only for the mental and emotional well-being of students, but
absolutely critical in helping children feel comfortable to express and work
through their struggles with learning.

love of learning is cultivated through curiosity.  Children tend to be naturally curious and
imaginative beings.  I, as a teacher,
have a responsibility to set the tone for the classroom.  I can either squelch or ignite children’s
curiosity.  Through enthusiasm, high
energy and a positive attitude, I make every effort to enter into the discovery
process with my students and to encourage their natural inquisitiveness.  As a result, a successful learning
environment is created.  Active learning
is vital in this process.  Engaging
children in large group, small group and individual activities that involve
critical thinking, problem solving, and hands-on activities encourages the
process of exploration and discovery and consequently, a joy of learning.  When this enthusiasm is accompanied with high
expectations for excellence, students will rise to meet these expectations. They
will not only be captivated by the learning process, but will also be excited to
witness their own progress in achieving their goals.  It is through this process that children
develop intrinsic motivation, and it is in part, this intrinsic motivation that
leads to becoming a life-long learner.

Life-long learning is important,
not only to personal success and joy in life, but also to our society and world
as a whole.  Life-long learners are able
to maintain their natural curiosity.  They
have developed good reading habits and are able to seek out and find information,
when they want answers to their questions. 
Life-long learners possess intrinsic motivation and they are aware of how
they best learn.    Building and encouraging these traits at a
young age is essential to inspire children to become life-long learners.  Continually encouraging children to be
curious about the world they live in is as important in the classroom as it is
in the midst of other activities throughout the day.  Whether it is encouraging children’s wonder
as they witness a group of ladybugs on a plant at recess, or discussing foods
form different regions during lunch, seizing these teachable moments is vital,
and often quite fun to partake in.  Children
who develop a love for reading are able to access information they are
interested in; an exceptionally important life skill.  Reading not only takes children to other
places, times, and lets them experience other cultures.  It brings them to the center of themselves,
in reflection and self-examination. 
Reading enables children to find quiet and calm away from the busyness of
the world that we live in.  Reading aids
in transforming children into well-rounded individuals who are able to
empathize and have compassion for others in their world.  Teaching children to see the joy in the
pursuit of excellence forms the vital intrinsic motivation.  Not only is this intrinsic motivation
important in helping children to become life-long learners.  It is vital that teachers take the time to
really study their students to determine what their learning styles are, and
then be able to share this knowledge with students.  Once children are able to appreciate how they
learn most effectively, they will be capable of capitalizing on their
strengths.  Students will eventually
achieve the ability to see how they fit within the group, as everyone has
different strengths to contribute.  This knowledge
is significant in creating an accepting and respect-filled environment in the

The classroom must be a nurturing,
loving and respectful environment. Not only do I strive to develop a positive
and inviting environment esthetically but I also focus on cultivating an atmosphere
of openness and approachability.  This is
done by developing excellent rapport with my students as well as collaborating
with parents and other professionals I work alongside.   It is
essential that students feel safe in the company of their teachers and other classmates
to be able to focus on their learning.  When children begin to realize their own, as
well as others strengths and challenges, they will develop respect for
themselves and other individuals, realizing that each of us is different with
our own unique gifts and talents, as well as challenges.  This fosters a sense of community, with
students working together to help all succeed in achieving excellence.  In an effort to make sure that each students
gets the time, attention and understanding that is necessary to achieve excellence,
I make every effort to make myself available to help struggling learners whenever
needed.  I am always ready to adapt
curriculum and work with students in organizing material to help children to
gain a firm understanding of material. 
This may include modifying material or coming up with other creative
ways to help the student to understand best.

            There is nothing like teaching;
inspiring others to discover their purpose and potential in this world.   It is
an incredible privilege to be able to impact young lives and to play a part in shaping
their future.  I believe that every child
has the ability to be outstanding and I readily give them the time needed to achieve
their finest.  I demand the best of
myself in this process, constantly re-evaluating my teaching and continually
striving for the most creative and effective methods to maximize my students
learning and success.  My constant and on-going
goal in teaching is dedication to my students and excellence in my teaching.
