Life of Pi Essay

A Film directed by Ang Lee portrays a story about a young Piscine Patel, A vegetarian Indian boy who grows up with a love of swimming and among a family circus, retells his story about a tragic journey that occurred while on an “adventure” from India to Canada. On the journey to Canada, Piscine finds himself stranded at sea with wild animals after the boat transporting his family capsizes, Piscine is then found stranded on a life boat with a tiger named “Richard Parker”.

The story is both an emotional and physical challenge, managing with this journey; Piscine must use skill and determination to survive this daunting journey. His challenges and the dealing with his eventual return to civilization pose some psychological questions that make this book more than just a story about a lost boy. To be persistent and overcome a set of obstacles is perseverance. Piscine Patel struggles to survive through seemingly impossible odds. Stranded on a little life boat with a bloodthirsty tiger, Piscine Patel uses his life skills and preservers through the situation to survive.

When Piscine says “my face set to a grim and determined expression” it portrays how determined Piscine is to survive the daunting journey, Although there were many thoughts going through Piscine’s head to immediately jump off the boat and put an end to this intimidating journey, his perseverance overcame his doubt and he did anything possible to survive. People that think perseverance and determination alone are omnipotent are the ones which withstand and undergo acts of bravery and courage to achieve there desired goal.

Piscine’s internal monologue in chapter 57 of Life of Pi, exposes the reader to how he persevered through the circumstances. “Without Richard Parker, I wouldn’t be alive today to tell you my story. ” Such a menacing creature should not get credit for keeping alive a slender, adolescent Indian boy. The presence of Richard Parker, though initially terrifying, eventually accommodates him with the courage and bravery to persevere through the journey. Hunger and dehydration drives Pi to the prominent limit of his vegetarian lifestyle. You never know what you are capable of doing until you suffer of hunger”, this results in Pi having to eat fish and breaking his lifestyle. As Pi ends a fish’s life, a close up angle was viewing pi, portraying the depressing emotion viewed onto his face. After a daunting storm, a scene is set for an experience with God. Pi states that “The presence of God is the finest of rewards”, the spirituality of this scene is demonstrated with smooth diegetic music and a peaceful setting with just the mere silence of the Pacific Ocean.

Hunger Games The novel Hunger Games written by Suzan Collins is about a post-apocalyptic world where punishment for a previous rebellion has resulted in a televised event. The film is set in Panem, a country created after the governments of North America collapsed . One boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each district,(there are 12 total)are selected at random and forced to participate in the Hunger Games, where “tributes” must fight to the death until only one is left standing.

The main character Katniss Everdeen; a strong-willed and unwavering spirit, who volunteers for the games in order to spare her younger sister. Once inside the death match arena, she must get down and dirty to outlive her competitors. Katniss must endure numerous deadly ordeals, navigate complex personal relationships, and learn to control how others perceive her in order to persevere and survive the Hunger Games.
