One of the most dynamic characters in the Hobbit is Bilbo Baggins. He was from a race of creatures, called hobbits, who were about half the size of humans, and he was beardless with hairy feet. He led thirteen dwarves to the Lonely Mountain to reclaim their treasure from a dragon, Smaug. Bilbo lives a time long ago where magical creatures exist. He leads a quiet life in his comfortable hole at Bag End and, like most hobbits, loves the comforts of home and hearth. He loves good, simple food in abundance, his pipe, and the well-furnished hobbit-hole. On page 11, Bilbo is smoking a pipe, eating and serving tea, coffee, cakes, jam, tarts, and pies to thirteen dwarves. This shows how he loves his daily comforts and preferred not to travel around. Some personality traits that Bilbo possesses are loyalty, courage, compassion, and a great deal of inner strength. When Gandalf persuades Bilbo to join the dwarves on the quest, he begins his process of character development, starting off as a small peaceful hobbit to a brave and confident hero at the end. Bilbo starts to show his courage and prove his ability to do what has to be done to win. For example, on page 141, a change comes over Bilbo. It says, “he felt like a different person, much fiercer and bolder.” This shows that he is becoming more self-aware, and instead of running away, he saved his friends from the spiders. In addition, Bilbo cries after Thorin’s death. On page 273, it says, “He wept until his eyes were red..He was a kindly little soul.” This proves that he cared about Thorin and the dwarves because he was a loyal friend.Bilbo Baggins in “The Hobbit” had to play a crucial role as the company’s burglar. He was invited by Thorin and Company to be their burglar on an adventure to reclaim treasure in the Lonely Mountain from Smaug, even despite his complaints and objections. The first thing Bilbo did as a burglar was to investigate a light in the forest. For example, on page 237, Bilbo became an actual burglar when he entered Smaug’s hoard that he finally admits to himself that he now fits the title. The text states,”His small hand would not close about it for it was a large and heavy gem; but he lifted it, shut his eyes, and put it in his deepest pocket. “Now I am a burglar indeed!” This shows that Bilbo has played his role in the story as a part of the company. One of Bilbo’s strengths is that he adapted and handled conflicts well. Several of his actions reveal his strengths throughout the journey. Because that he is able to adapt to new situations, he keeps himself alive. For example, on page 227, He discovers Smaug’s vulnerable spot, where it gets shot by Bard’s arrow. This shows he has intelligence and clever thinking.A weakness that Bilbo had was that he was too dependent on the familiar comforts of home at times during the journey. Bilbo, facing many difficulties on his journey, finds himself often hungry and longing for safety, which makes him feel regretful for embarking on such a difficult journey. He was not used to the harsh conditions of travel and had very little experience. Another weakness Bilbo had was that he lied many times and was dishonest. In the book, Bilbo lies about how he got the Ring. For example, on page 92, Bilbo does not reveal the existence of the ring to Gandalf and the dwarves. This reveals a flaw in his moral character
