The sum-up of Piaget’s theories includes phases of larning through cognitive development. The cognitive position was revolutionized by Jean Piaget. a Swiss psychologist. Piaget proposed “that all people pass in a fixed sequence through a series of cosmopolitan phases of cognitive development” . ( Feldman. 2008. p. 20 )
Piaget’s theory outlined four phases of development. Piaget’s Four Stages of Learning The four phases of larning are sensorimotor. birth to 2 old ages old. preoperational. ages 2 to 4. concrete operations. ages 7 to 11. and formal operations. ages 11 to 15. Campbell. 1976. p. 1 ) Piaget’s four phase larning theoretical account demonstrates how the head processes new information encountered at different ages. The kid does non travel from one phase to the following until it has reached physical ripening and has experienced relevant state of affairss. ( Feldman. 2008. p. 151 ) In the sensorimotor phase the baby learns through interaction with the environment. which could include talking and touching points to construct an apprehension of oneself at this phase of cognitive development.
The baby is unable to talk therefore learns through assimilation. ( Campbell. 1976. p. 1 ) Catherine P. Cook-Cottone used Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development to analyse pupil reding Sessionss. In her article “Using Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development to Understand the Construction of Mending Narratives” she identifies the phases of acquisition of pupils in Sessionss. Students in the sensorimotor phase “may enter the guidance state of affairs with a really limited ability to gestate and depict their presenting problems” . Cook-Cottone. Fall 2004. Volume 7. p. 182 ) In the pre-operational phase gestating abstractly is non possible.
There needs to be concrete physical state of affairss for the kid to understand there is a difference. The kid needs to see objects in simple ways with of import characteristics puting it apart from other objects. ( Feldman. 2008. p. 151 ) In “Using Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development to Understand the Construction of Mending Narratives” there is a sequence of larning for the pupils in therapy who work through deciding their jobs. Cook-Cottone. Fall 2004. Volume 7 ) In pre-operational phase pupils are able to label the countries of concerns.
“As pupils gain therapueutic experience with constructs or issues. they begin to develop progressively organized scheme for the problem-related experences” . ( Cook-Cottone. Fall 2004. Volume 7. p. 182 ) Concrete operations stage the kid begins to believe abstractly and is able to gestate. ( Feldman. 2008. p. 151 ) The kid creates logical accounts for the physical experience it is associating to or sees. Catherine P. Cook-Cotton provinces “Once labels are systematically used in the guidance state of affairs. pupils narratives become increasing more focussed on doing many connexions among experiences. ( Cook-Cottone. Fall 2004. Volume 7. p. 183 )
The 4th and concluding acquisition phase is formal operations. This phase is the concluding acquisition stage for an person. There is no longer a demand for concrete objects to ground. and hypothesis Begins. ( Campbell. 1976 ) In “Using Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development to Understand the Construction of Healing Narratives” the pupils “ . . ave achieved a formal integrating of the problem-specific content. they begin to do a sophisticated associations among more abstract thoughts in addtion to being able to do associations amoung concrete experiences” . ( Cook-Cottone. Fall 2004. Volume 7. p. 183 ) Piaget’s Theory vs. B. F. Skinner Operant Theory With “operant conditioning. formulated and championed by psychologist B. F. Skinner. persons learn to move intentionally on their environments in order to convey approximately coveted consequences” . ( Feldman. 2008. p. 19 )
Cognitive Development operates on the single assessing. acquisition and developing through inner egos and their experience with the environment. With operant conditioning the single learns by reenforcing a behaviour through a series of wagess or effects to avoid the behaviour. In other words. positive or negative effects determine the acquisition. and ultimate behavioural result. Conclusion Piaget’s theory of cognitive development revolutionized the manner acquisition was observed. The focal point turned to how an single learns from within alternatively of detecting the environment and what the single learns from their milieus.
