Planned Parenthood Essay

Planned Parenthood

In today’s society, women, men and teenagers have the option of affordable and confidential healthcare concerning pregnancy and sex education information, so that they can make informed decisions. Planned Parenthood is a trusted healthcare provider that offers these services and many more. 90 percent of the services that they provide are preventive primary care, they also have abortion clinics. Many people have conflicting opinions about Planned Parenthood and their goals. Some people think very highly of Planned Parenthood, because they feel that they are a safe, reliable source. Then there are others who feel that Planned Parenthoods primary concern is making money. For example, Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood clinic director wrote that she was given an “abortion quota” and she was told by her superiors to double the number of abortions in order to bring in more revenue (Abby Johnson Op-Ed in The Hill, “Exposing the Planned Parenthood business model,” April 4, 2011.) Lately there has been some controversy as to whether Planned Parenthood should stop operating. Many people feel that the organization is in-humane and should be shut down because they feel that their primary concern is making money, and not people’s healthcare.

Planned Parenthood’s primary focus is the opposite. One of the things that people don’t seem to understand about Planned Parenthood is that it teaches teenagers and young adults how to practice “safe sex”. Since 50% of pregnancies are unplanned, and one-third of unplanned pregnancies result in abortion, Planned Parenthood’s goal is to give people as much knowledge as they can, so that they won’t have to have an unplanned pregnancy. There are many conservative religious groups, that believe abstinence is the only thing teens and young adults should be taught in regards to birth control methods, and they believe that Planned Parenthood should be banned. Dr. Laura Meyers is a director at a Planned Parenthood clinic. She has to pass through a wall of Operation Rescue protesters almost each day as she arrives at the clinic. Meyers grew up in a “very devout” Roman Catholic family. In the late 1960s, she was informed by the church’s social justice tradition and her “responsibility to live out Jesus’ mandate to care for others.” She left the Catholic tradition, and as an adult she became involved in the United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school.

Meyers explains that the Christian protesters’ tirades aren’t very Christian at all. “Jesus never talked about abortion,” she says. “But he talked a lot about love…” (Religion & Politics; Can There Be a Religious Response to Planned Parenthood’s Critics? By Mara Willard, November 12, 2012 A recent report by the National Center for Health Statistics shows that the number of live births per 1,000 women has dropped from 71 in 1990 to 68 in the year 2008. This decrease also includes a 40% decrease in teenage births. The availability of Birth Control, contraception and sex education play a huge role in the contribution to those statistics. Many people, especially those people who are pro-life (anti-abortion) only associate the word abortion when they hear the name Planned Parenthood. They aren’t the only organization with abortion clinics. In fact, Planned Parenthood makes up only 10 % of all abortion facilities.
