Equatorial
Guinea, under the leadership of His Excellency the President of the Republic
Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, has undergone a major transformation over the past two
decades. Our country has a long and bloody history of crime, violence and
political instability which followed centuries of colonial rule. Recognizing
the need to achieve peace and prosperity in the region, Equatorial Guinea in
the recent years took several initiatives putting us on a path to raid economic
development.
We
have made significant contributions to promote education, healthcare,
sanitation, food security among African nations. Having two African Union
summits, the South America-Africa Summit, the 4th annual Arab-Africa Summit,
the Turkey-Africa Summit, the Ebola Donor Conference and numerous other
important international conferences, we are in a much better position at
bringing our country into the light than we were before.
We
have significantly improved our bilateral relations with several member nations
including the Permanent Members by establishing diplomatic missions in those
nations and through trade and commerce. Leveraging on our rich hydrocarbon
reserves and to increase U.S. investment in our country we have deemed US
Passport holders for visa-free entry into our country. Our relationship with
People’s Republic of China too boomed since 2013 with China assisting us
through several investments which included building a vocational school,
delivery of anti-malaria drugs and donation of solar cells.
Keeping
in mind the spirit of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) which
proclaimed the faith the member nations have on fundamental human rights,
equality and freedom, Equatorial Guinea has transmitted it into practice by
expunging our nation from any kind of Weapons of Mass Destruction(WMD) Nuclear,
Chemical or Biological. We are signatories to the Nuclear Nonproliferation
Treaty (NPT), the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BWC) and the
Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). We are also a member of the Non-Aligned
Movement (NAM). Equatorial Guinea will continue to be a torchbearer of peace
and prosperity in Central Africa.
We
henceforth join the council in strongly condemning the inhumane chemical
weapons attacks in Syria and believes that the perpetrators of the chemical
weapons attack should be brought to justice in the appropriate manners. We
henceforth endorse a resolution to authorize an investigation into usage of
Chemical Weapons in Syria. But we also call upon the council to identify the
actual perpetrators before approving any sanctions on Syria as allegations are
no reasonable basis for any actions or sanctions. Equatorial Guinea does not
believe in sanctioning states involved in the conflict and recent escalation. A
solution which truly benefits the Syrian people can only be achieved only
through a political solution and not a military action.
