The electrical energy consumption in India is the thirdbiggest after China and USA with 5.5% global share in 2016.
The per personenergy use rate in India is closer to 0.7 KW. India’s share with global energydemand will rise to 9% by 2035. Internet of Things (IoT) is an emergingfield and IoT based devices have created a revolution in electronics and IT. The foremost objective of this project is to createawareness about energy consumption and efficient use of home appliances forenergy savings.
Due to manual work, our existing electricity billing system hasmajor drawbacks. This system gives the information on meter reading, power cutand the alert systems for producing an alarm when energy consumption exceedsbeyond the specified limit using IoT. This idea is being implemented to reducethe human dependency to collect the monthly reading and minimize the technicalproblems regarding billing process. This project extends the design andimplementation of an energy monitoring system with the pre-intimation of poweragenda using Arduino micro controller and a GSM (Global System for MobileCommunication) module. The advantage of this system is that a user canunderstand the power consumed by the electrical appliances on the daily basisand can take further steps to control them and thus help in energyconservation.
From the electricityboard section, the information regarding the bill amount, payment and thepre-planned power shut down details are communicated to the consumer. If thecustomer does not pay the bill in time, the user is informed through a message.If still the customer does not pay the bill, then as per designatedconsideration, one alert message will be sent then automatically powerconnection is disconnected from the remote server. In the already existingsmart energy meter, it shows the energy consumed by the appliances from thedate of installation of the energy meter and its corresponding rupees. In thisproposed energy meter, the meter gives the energy consumed on daily basis, itscorresponding rupees, billing details and payment using IoT. Additionally, ithas the main objective of giving the pre-intimation of power schedule and analert system for producing an alarm when the energy consumption exceeds beyondthe certain limit.
It also has the facility of terminating the power supplywhen the residents are out of station to minimize the wastage of energy. This system not only reduces the power cutissues and the labor cost for noticing the residential energy consumption inregular intervals but also increases the energy conservation with the help ofalarm systems and the energy meter accuracy by reducing the billing error andthe cost of maintenance. Introduction The utility sector inIndia has one National Grid with an installed capacity of 330.86 GW as on 30November 2017. Renewable power plants constituted for 31.7% of total installedcapacity.
During the year 2016-2017, the gross electricity generated byutilities in India was 1,236.39 TWh and the total electricity generation in thecountry was 1,433.4 TWh. In the year 2016-2017, the gross electricityconsumption was 1,122 kWh per capita.
India is the third largest producer ofelectricity in the world and stands fourth largest in the electricityconsumption. The electric energy consumed by the agricultural sector was recorded17.89% in 2015-16 among all countries. Despite cheaper electricity tariff inIndia, the per capita electricity consumption is low compared to many countries.
The power generationcapacity in India is surplus but the adequate infrastructure for supplyingelectricity to all needy people is lacking. In order to develop the infrastructureto to supply adequate electricity to all the needy people in the country byMarch 2019, the Government of India launched a scheme called “Power for All”.This scheme will ensure continuous and uninterrupted power supply to all industries,households, and commercial establishments by improving necessary infrastructure.It’s a joint responsibility by the Government of India with states to sharefunding and create overall growth of the economy. The electricity sectorin India is dominated by fossil fuels, particularly coal, which produced abouttwo thirds of all electricity in the year 2016. However, only the investment ofrenewable energy is increased by the Government.
The Draft National ElectricityPlan of 2016 prepared by the Government of India states that the country doesnot need additional non-renewable power plants in the utility sector until2027, with the commissioning of 50,025 MW coal-based power plants underconstruction and achieving 275,000 MW total installed renewable power capacity. India became the third largest producer of electricityin the world with 4.8% of global share. Out of the total power generated therenewable energy constituted for about 28.43% and the non-renewable energyconstituted for about 71.57% 1. Electricity is the vital requirement forleading a comfortable life. It is to be properly used and managed.
At present,the human operator from the Electricity Board visits the resident to take thereadings from the energy meter and produces the bill for the particular monthmanually.The idea is being proposed to reduce thehuman interference to collect the monthly reading and to minimize the technicalproblems regarding the billing process. From the electricity board section, theinformation regarding the bill amount, payment and the pre-planned power shutdown details are communicated to the consumer. If the customer does notpay the bill intime, the user is informed through a message using IoT. If still the customer does not paythe bill, then as per designated consideration, one alert message will be sentthen automatically power connection is disconnected from the remote server. Itprovides pre-intimation of power cut details and also the energyconsumption on daily basis. It providesan alert if the energy consumption exceeds beyond the certain limit.
It alsohas the facility of terminating the power supply through a message when the residents are outof station to minimize the wastage of energy. It isan effective way of greater accuracy, improved billing.In apartments, theenergy meter is far away from the residents. An LCD display is placed in eachresidential house in the apartment to inform about the messages regarding thepower cut, energy consumption on daily basis, billing details and an alarm forthe critical limit indication.These features areimplemented using the Arduino NodeMCU (esp8266) micro controller and a GSMmodule 1. Esp8266 chip is the wifi module which helps in transferring thedata through the internet. In case, if internet does not work, a GSM is usedfor backup purposes. BLOCK DIAGRAM II.
Proposed System Theexisting model is a time consuming process and it needs a lot of labor. Theproposed system eliminates the need of labor and it is a cost efficient and atime saving process. Theproposed system gives the information about the energy consumption on dailybasis, billing and payment through IoT, pre-intimation of shut down details,alert systems when the energy consumption exceeds beyond the critical limit andthe disconnection of power through a message when the residential are out ofstation to prevent the wastage of energy. III. System Description In this system, a unique Id is given for each energy meter. This unique Idnumber is interlinked with the customer’s unique mobile Id number. Itconstantly monitors the energy meter. The energy consumption from each house issent to the control station through the web server and the billing and powercut details are sent from the control station to the residential energy meter.
A. Energy consumption on daily basisIn the existingenergy meter, the meter shows the energy consumed from the date ofinstallation. In this system, the daily energy consumed is calculated using thearduino micro controller and it is displayed in the LCD. It is alsocommunicated to the consumer’s mobile using IoT. B. BillingAnd Payment Through IoT Thebilling detail for the energy consumed is communicated to the consumer monthlythrough the web server using IoT and as a message through the GSM module.
The payment is also made through the webserver. This helps in eliminating the manual dependency to collect the reading.C. Pre-Intimation of Shut Down Thesudden power cut causes major problems in hospitals, industries and in publicsectors. In order to be aware or to make safety precautions in hospitals, thepower cut is announced in advance. The power cut details are sent from EB webserver to the consumer’s unique ID using IoT and it is also sent to theconsumer’s mobile as a message through the GSM module. The details are alsodisplayed in the LCD display after an alarm.
The alarm is used to indicate the residentialthat a new message has been received. LCD DisplayD. AlertSystems Ourelectricity billing system has a format that when the energy is consumed beyondthe certain limit, double charges are collected i.e. they are charged twice thenormal rate. In order to create awareness to the public, an alarm will beprovided when the energy consumed by the consumer reaches a nearer value ofcritical limit. The message is also displayed in the LCD display.E.
Power Disconnectionthrough a messageWhen the residential are out of station and ifthey have forgotten to off the power, it can be disconnected by sending amessage through the GSM module. This helps to prevent the wastage of energy ifany equipment has been forgotten to off. IV. Advantages· Thissystem shows the energy consumed on daily basis, hence it helps to reduce theconsumption by comparing the daily usages.· It reducesthe human interference to collect the monthly reading and it also saves the timeand money.· The pre-announcedshut down details helps to take necessary preventive measures and also helps tocharge the essential equipments.
· The alarm systemhelps to create awareness to the public regarding their energy consumption andthe corresponding charges.· It preventsthe wastage of energy by disconnecting the power through a message when theresidents are out of station.· The LCDdisplay, situated in the distribution board helps the residents in theapartments to be aware of the messages in the LCD display since they are faraway from the energy meter. V. Conclusion TheArduino esp8266 micro controller is programmed to perform the objectives withthe help of GSM module. It is proposed to overcome all the disadvantages in thealready existing energy meter.
All the details are sent to the consumer’s mobilethrough the IoT and the GSM module and it is also displayed in the LCD. It is a time saving process and it helps toeliminate the human interference.
