I believe that when I have more work that needs to be completed, I have less of an opportunity to sleep urine the night.
This sentiment has been echoed by many of my classmates and friends, therefore I think that this is a common situation amongst college students. In this paper, I am going to refer to a similar study, as well as propose the most appropriate method to conduct this study, which is through survey. In addition, I will be comparing and contrasting the benefits and the drawbacks of this methodology, along with this study relevance to previously existing studies on this topic.Literature Review The study entitled “Pathways of sleep, affect, and stress constellations urine the first year of college: transition difficulties of emerging adults” deals with questions relating to “how sleep patterns and daily salient experiences change during the first year, how these changes covariate with affective states and sense of experienced stress, and to explore the possible adaptive and less adaptive ways of coping with the transition to college” (Aria and Salmon, 2012:273).This study also dealt with questions regarding how Israeli college students’ daily stresses, including those from their workload, affect their sleeping habits and how they changed over time during their first ear of college. The format for this study was a web-based daily diary through which students expressed their daily sleeping patterns and what elements affected their ability to obtain a normal amount of sleep.The students participating in the study completed their daily diaries twice- once in the middle of their first and second semester. They inputted information about daily sleep, affective mood, the quality of sleep that they experienced, and indicators of how well that they have adjusted to their new environment of college.
The main findings of the research was that there are three distinct clusters of students: the well-adjusted, the re-adjusted, and the mall-adjusted.The well-adjusted and the mall-adjusted are the two major clusters, and the re-adjusted is a sub-cluster. The re-adjusted students are characterized by “a decreased number of sleep hours, higher sleep variability, and increased number of hours of studying compared with members of the other two groups during the first semester assessment” (Aria and Salmon, 201 2:273), while the two major clusters differed in the quantity and quality of their sleep, s well as indicators of their stresses and how their sleeping habits affect their mood.It was found that the students reported a greater number Of daily stresses and negative affect in the second semester, but they were able to deal with these issues much more effectively than during the first semester.
One weakness of the research that was done in this study is that a vast majority (almost 3/4) of the participants were females. Although there were no differences found between the males and females in this study, perhaps a second study should be replicated with a larger sample of males.It should also be noted that Israelis attend college after their required term in the military. The impact of the military may have hidden effects on the students, who had their sleeping patterns strictly controlled for a period of two to three years.
In their first year of college, they must adjust to the idea that they are now in control oftener own sleeping habits, instead of someone else mandating their sleeping periods to them.This effect cannot be understood through this study and how their previous military experience may affect their decision-making. A strength of this research method is that the students pathways of adapting to their new college environments were able to be effectively captured through the means of the daily-diary. Furthermore, the day-to-day element of the daily diary allowed the researchers to understand how sleep affects the students’ transitional period and how important of a role that it plays during this time in their lives.This article relates to my research proposal because it also measures the students’ ability to obtain sleep while handling their college workload. However, this study focused lowly on Israeli students, while am proposing to research American students.
Also, I want to include college students of all years, not only on first- year students. A focus on all college students does not require the students to repeat the survey a second time, as the study will not focus on how first-year students cope over time with their workload.Methodology I am going to go about studying my research question through the survey research method.
I am going to make an online survey, using the website Surveying. This method is appropriate for my study because I will be able o reach a wider range of students and I will be able to access much more data than I would be able to if I had chosen an alternative research method. The survey will include questions about the participant’s age, gender, year of college, how many units they are taking, and whether they live on or off campus.Students will also be asked to calculate the average number of hours of sleep that they get for both weekdays and weekends.
They will also be questioned about how much sleep, in general, that they give up to complete assignments for their classes (based on the expected amount of sleep that he student would receive on an average night). Discussion and Conclusion My specific research question does not limit the participants by race or by what year of college that they are in, like the study that I previously examined.Another benefit to this proposed study is that it only requires the student to complete the survey once. In the other study, the students had to fill out their seven day daily diary two times.
Some Of the students did not complete the diary two times, so their data could not be included of analyzed in the study. All of the data collected from the proposed survey can be included on the basis that the participants only have to provide their responses one time.A drawback to the proposed study is within a similar vein of this idea. By only gathering information one time, some information about how important sleep is to students at different points in the year is lost. Also, this proposed research does not pay any special attention to the students’ major or to what programs that they are involved in. The students are asked about how many units that they are taking, but this amount of units does not necessarily indicate the difficulty of the students’ workload.This proposed study allows researchers to learn more about how the college workload affects the students’ sleeping patterns.
The research is not limited by race or ethnicity, as many different races and ethnicities live in the U. S. , which makes it somewhat of a non-factor in this study. This allows for a broader view and a broader understanding of how a college student’s sleeping habits are molded around their workload. A college student’s sleeping habits generally revolve around their workload ND the study and work time that is required of it.
