Executive summaryMost organization leaders are facing challenges that are not only limiting their performance but also the performance of the company at large. The leaders have adopted several measures and solution to help them to overcome the challenges that they are facing.Amongst the challenges that the leaders are facing are: Decision Making, Communication with employees, the Culture of the company, the changing roles of the leaders, building the right management team, Strategy Formulation, Feedback mechanism and Organization direction.The following are the solutions that leaders should use to overcome the challenge: Innovative thinking, Formulating strategy as a group, Effective communication System and Empowerment of the employees and Training all the people (leaders and employees)IntroductionMost organization leaders are facing challenges that are not only limiting their performance but also the performance of the company at large. The leaders have adopted several measures and solution to help them to overcome the challenges that they are facing.
Some of their solution for the challenges has worked out while some has failed. In this project we are gong to research on the challenges that the leaders are facing are they solutions that they are adopting to help them to overcome the challenge.Methods and MethodologyA research was conducted to find out challenges that most leaders of organizations and company faced. In the fast phase of the study, we interviewed Owners, President, and Vice President, Directors, Commanding Officers and heads of department. We requested them to identify the challenges that they were facing as today leaders. In the second phase of my research I did an in depth interview with one owner, one president, one vice president, one director one commanding officer and one head of department, the people selected were the one who have been identified in the fast phase of the interview. In the second phase of the interview, the selected leaders provided me with a wide range of their personal account on whatever action they took to help them to overcome the challenges that they were facing.
After analyzing these interviews I came up with a multidimensional model that links the types of challenges that today leaders are facing, with the competence, personality traits and professional experience that are required to overcome the challenges. I also identified some common characteristics of successful leaders that are to be considered, for a leader to succeed in overcoming the challenges that they are likely to face.Primary Challenges faced by leaders in today’s organizationv Decision Making Many organization leaders do make decisions that affect other employee’s and the overall performance of the organization. In the event that a leader makes a bad decision it is likely that it will have a negative impact on the company. Leaders need to ensure they always make a sound decision. (Ritcev 998 page 13)v Communication with employeesThis is one of the major challenges that leader face.
There is usually a need to communicate constantly with employees and other line managers, constant communication in the work place will reinforce the main thrusts while putting the company into the course of achieving its goals and mission. Lack of communication with employees has made many companies to fail to achieve their goals despite having a good strategy. The method used in communicating with employees is also a problem that leaders are facing. Some of the methods like hearsay, rumors and email have been found not to be effective. (Ritcev 998 page 15)v The Culture of the companyThe cultures of corporate and of organization all flows from the top level of management to the lower level. The policies and rules (unwritten and written) that leaders do lay down in the organization eventually finds their way into the performance and in the attitude of the employees. It usually a fact that when dealing with human being is that, employees will always give the leaders the behavior they reward.
In the event that culture indirectly or directly rewards a certain behavior or attitude that an employee is. For a leader to change the behavior of an employee he first needs to evaluate the current culture and rewards the type of behavior that the he is getting rather than the one that the leader wanted. The ability of the leader to persevere while facing stiff opposition from high level decision makers and experts in the company is one of the most high risk times; he needs to stand by the culture of the organization. (Ritcev 998 page 15)v The changing roles of the leaders.The roles of manager’s keeps on changing, at times they have to move away from their job of management to the level of training employees or of giving employees a hand in their job, leaders are also faced with position opening that they can’t fill. Their roles keep on changing with time and with the introduction of new technology.
v Building the right management team.This is one of the greatest challenges that managers face. Given that management team is one of the core units of the organization. For any organization to succeed the management team should be made up of people who are vibrant and qualified. In the event that a leader comes up with a management team that is not efficient the company and the leader may fail to achieve their target, objectives and goals. The leader needs to know the type of person required for a certain management job, in terms of qualifications, experience and personal antiques.
v Strategy FormulationFormulation of an organization strategy is another challenge that leaders face. Strategies do determine the way that an organization or a company will be run for a given period of time. Most leaders fear formulating company strategy, they perceive it to as an enormous task, because of its sensitivity and the fact that it consumes a lot of time.
Company’s growth is normally linked to growth of the company; this makes the leaders to formulate new business models every time.v Organization directionAnother challenge that leaders are facing according to the survey is effectively communicating to the employees the direction of the organization with a lot of consistency and clarity. Many leaders who were interviewed were poor at this.v Feedback mechanismThe research also showed that many leaders had a problem when it comes to give their employees feedback about their work performance. Most employees want to know how they are doing. Failing to give the employees feedback they need is just like keeping them in the dark in terms of assessing their performance. (Ritcev 998 page 20)The skills leaders need to acquire and hone in order to succeed.
In the second phase of the interview, the selected leaders provided me with a wide range of their personal account on whatever action they took to help them to overcome the challenges that they were facing. The ability to fulfill the leadership role is honed by the professional experience of the leaders who were interviewed their personality traits. After analyzing these solutions I came up with the following multidimensional model as solution to the challenges facing the leaders.v Innovative thinkingMost leaders managed to overcome the challenges that they were facing by being innovative. They were always out looking for new ideas, they were, not wedded to the notions that employees had. The leaders made interconnection of their diverse experience and opportunities whenever they were faced with a challenge that required critical thinking. (Ritcev 998 page 24)v Effective communication SystemMost leaders overcame the challenge of communication by a adopting a communication system.
Amongst the system that they adopted were meeting between them and employees, they also discouraged rumors and hearsays in the work place. In the meetings they encouraged employees to be free and to air out any burning issue that they had. Using effective communication skills employees were also able get a feed back about their work. (Ritcev 998 page 24)v Formulating strategy as a groupThe leaders overcame the problem of strategy formulation by engaging other employees and experts in the organization. When other employees were engaged the process of strategy formulation became easier and less time was spent on it.v Empowerment of the employeesLeaders believed that employees were part of the solution to the challenges that they were facing.
So they empowered each employee. The employees were allowed to make decision that they perceive as a correct one. The employees were also allowed to have utmost latitude towards their duty (Ritcev 998 page 31).v Training all the people (leaders and employees)Leaders and employees underwent constant training to ensure that they were at par with the changing technology.
