Reviewof the related literature; besides allowing the researcher to introduce himselfwith current knowledge in the field or area in which he is going to conduct hisresearch. A careful review of the books, dissertations, theses, researchjournal and other sources of informations related to the problem is one of theimportant steps of any research study. The term ‘review’ means ‘revision’ or’refers back’.
Research takes advantage of the past knowledge which hascollected in the past as a result of constant human efforts. So we cannotisolate the work that has already been done on the problems which are directlyor indirectly related to a study proposed by a researcher. The review of the relatedliterature enables the researcher to define the limits of his field.
It helpsthe researcher to delimit and define his problem. PURPOSEOF THE REVIEWByreviewing the related literature the researcher can avoid unintentionalduplication of well-established findings.Throughthe review of related literature, the researcher can avoid unfruitful uselessproblem areas. He can select those areas in which positive findings are very likelyto result and meaningful.Itgives the researcher an understanding of the research methodology. It helps theresearcher to know about the tools and instruments which provide to be useful promisingin the previous studies. The advantage of the related literature is also toprovide insight into the statistical methods through which validity of resultto be established.
Byreviewing the related literature we know about the recommendations of previousresearchers listed in their studies for further research.IDENTIFICATIONOF THE RELATED LITERATUREThefirst step in reviewing the literature is identification of the material thatis to be read and evaluated. The identification can be made through the use ofprimary and secondary sources available. Primary sources includes, the authorreports in his own work in the form of dissertations, theses, books andresearch articles etc.
In secondary sources, the author compiles and summarisesthe findings of the work done by others. It includes encyclopedia of education, education indexes, abstracts, bibliographies, and bibliographical references. For this purpose, thereview of literature is being presented under four sections: Studies related withteaching style, emotional intelligence, occupational stress and teachingcompetency.
