Rise to Power: Lord of the Flies Essay

Disappointment marked his life since his childhood and consistent failure in his earlier life led him to become a cruel ruler. Adolf Hitler was a dictator of Germany and he focused his hatred in the Jewish community. He manipulated the Germans by promising them protection and firm leadership. In the book, “Lord of the Flies”, by William Golding, the character Jack Merridew represents Adolf Hitler and his actions. They are both cruel and are eager to get power at any extent. They maintained power and control by using cruel methods and punishing people.

Hitler killed millions of Jews and non-Germans and his opponents, and Jack punished whoever disobeyed in his tribe and tried to get rid of anyone that might be a threat like Ralph. Both Hitler’s and Ralph’s continuous failure made their anger grow and caused them to reach a point where there was no humanity left in them. First, Adolf Hitler had a rough childhood that had violence in its memories. “Adolf Hitler was a little-known political leader whose early life had been marked by disappointment. ” (Beck, Roger 477)He was born on April 20th, 1889 in Braunau am Inn. He was born to Alois Hitler and Karla Polzl.

Out of six children, only he and his younger sister, Paula, could survive into adulthood. He currently had to witness his fathers brutal violence towards his mother, his father would often beat him and his mom. Hitler had unfathomable bitterness towards his father who wanted him to pursue a career like his, Hitler’s’ father was a custom official by profession, but instead he dropped out of high school as a revolt towards his father. After dropping out of high school, he tried to be a painter but he was twice rejected by the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna during 1907-1908.

Hitler’s hatred towards Jews began from having seen an orthodox Jew community in Vienna. He blamed Jews for Germanys collapse and economic problems. Second, after World War I began, Hitler volunteered for the German army and was awarded for bravery. Later, when the war ended, he settled in Munich and joined a political group whose beliefs were that Germany must overturn the Treaty of Versailles and battle against communism. This political party later named itself the National Socialist German Workers party, or the Nazis.

Soon, Hitler became the leader of this group and wanted more power so they planned to take over Munich, but failed and was sentenced to five years of jail; he served less than nine months. After getting out he revived the Nazi party and was later named chancellor by Erich Hindenburg. Once he had political and economic power, he wanted more. He “wanted control over every aspect of German life. ” Hitler wanted the Nazi power to control everything they blamed the Jews for everything that went wrong and also accused them of wanting to take over.

Third, in “Lord of the Flies”, Jack was a school boy, about twelve years old. After the crash of the plane on the island, he tried to be in charge. But the votes of the others told otherwise. When the boys established that they needed a chief to help them keep order they had to make a vote between Ralph and Jack, Ralph was victorious. “Even the choir applauded; and the freckles on Jack’s face disappeared under a blush of mortification. ” This quote tells that Jack was left humiliated when the majority of the boys chose Ralph to be chief.

Not being elected chief made him angry. Jack was also very into hunting, but not many of the boys wanted to because they would get tired, so he would continue hunting n his own. Jacks continuous failure to gain more authority on the island made his anger towards Ralph greater over time. Fourth, after many times of feeling humiliated for not being chosen chief and not being given as much authority as he wants, Jack decides to go on his own. He wants the boys to vote Jack out of being chief, but no one votes for that.

He told them: “I’m not going to play any longer. Not with you. ” He also said, “I’m going off by myself. He can catch his own pigs. Anyone who wants to hunt when I do can come too. ” Jack made his own tribe and later most of the boys sneaked away to join him as hunters. Soon there were only 4 boys left and then little by little Jack forced others and got rid of Piggy so that no one would jeopardize his power. In conclusion, Adolf Hitler was a cruel dictator who used his power to terrorize other people and keep his power.

He promised Germans that he would get more land and keep them protected. He was a very good manipulator. He also blamed the Jews for all the misfortune that struck Germany and thought they must be exterminated. The character Jack represented Hitler because like him, he was also cruel and once he had power he used his violent ways to keep it. Whatever humanity they both had became lost because the power took over their thoughts and weren’t humane any longer. The only way they could both stop was by the intervention of stronger forces
