3.   Reflection of Skills


Working as an amateur in the lab, I have
developed many skills that I feel are essential to my academic and professional
development. The first skill I have developed though laboratory work is data
collection and analysis. I have gained the skills over the course of
undertaking experiments, making observations, recording the data, and evaluating
the data to understand the observations. Data analysis has improved my
competence in working with statistics and representing the statistics in a way
that is easy to understand and interpret. The data analysis skills enable me to
identify relationships between variables and to identify patterns in the data. I
am learning to accept that not all experiments will produce the results I hope
for and that any anomalies can be legitimately explained when the reasons and
possibilities for any inaccuracies are explored. The analytical skills I have
gained are important in my professional development as a nutritionist.


The next skill I have developed is the
ability to work within a team. Lab experiments usually involve more than one
person carrying out specific tasks towards a common goal and different tasks
should be carried out by each team member for speed and efficiency. Working in
teams has improved my communication skills and ability to coordinate with
others. Teamwork has enhanced by conflict management skills and ability to
negotiate with other people towards a more favourable outcome. Another skill
that I have developed from experimentation is the capacity to use, calibrate
and manipulate different instruments such as the spectrophotometer, the
microscope, the measuring devices and the weighing scales. However, I still
feel that I need more time with these instruments so that I do not have to keep
referring to my notes when using them.  


One particular area that I feel has been
problematic during experiments which require taking measurements is my lack of
knowledge of conversions. I have written a list of relevant conversion in the
back of my lab book to refer to during the sessions.


In general, laboratory work has improved
my planning and organising abilities because experiments require preparation
and effective management.

4.   Scientific Method


Using science, we try to explain how and why
things ensue, in order to gain knowledge about the world. Scientific research
can eventually lead to crucial discoveries, which have the potential to improve
the way we live. Every day, society makes decisions that may be based on what
science says, such as what food to eat, how we educate our children, or even
how to dress or act to become successful. Scientists come up with theories and
then they test them to see if they are correct and this is done through the
process of investigations, experimentations, collecting data, analysing data, and making interpretations from
the data.


During our practical sessions, we carry
out experiments which are initiated by a question or the need for an answer.
For example: “What will happen to potato chips when submerged in varying
concentrations of sucrose solutions?” A hypothesis is developed to describe the
expectations of the laboratory work once thorough background research on the
particular subject has been done. A hypothesis is a potential explanation for
an observed event, or a proposed experimental procedure.


The design of experiments must provide
data to confirm or rebute the hypothesis. Care should be taken to ensure
experiments are reliable and reproducible and if necessary, they should include
both negative and positive control groups. It is important for all variables to
be kept constant or monitored.


Once data is collected, it is then analysed to formulate
a conclusion, which is then evaluated to determine whether it is in
alignment with the hypothesis. Finally, the results of the laboratory work are documented and communicated to other
faculty members and students to review.
