Nowadays more and more young people are going to study abroad. Like everything else, studying abroad has both favorable and unfavorable aspects. Generally; the favorable aspects can be listed as follows. First, they think by attending a college in a foreign country they can not only acquire useful knowledge of science but also the culture and customs of other nations. Secondly, they can take advantage of this opportunity to gain a good command of the target language. Moreover they can meet different people and enjoy different culture, which may help to broaden their views.
Every coin has two sides. The negative aspects are also apparent. When they study abroad, they have to pay a lot of money. In order to help bear the financial burden, most overseas students have to seek for employment during the vacation, which can’t allow them to focus their attention on studies. What’s more, they face language obstacles and homesickness. However, in the long run, the students will discover that the benefits of self-dependence and the mastery of a foreign language often outweigh the hardships experienced in their foreign studies.
By studying abroad they will be able to learn more advanced science and technology than they do in their own country. These benefits often take the form of a well-paid and satisfying job and are the major rewards most of the students studying abroad expect. It is undeniable that studying abroad has brought a good opportunity for students to improve their personality and knowledge.
But it is also true that studying far from home have been existed some negative effects; nonetheless, there are clearly some advantages. (41) It is often alleged that students who study in the foreign countries have experienced not only stress but also depression. This is a consequence of undergoing homesickness and cultural shocks. For instance, while moving to a new place, there are many things need to appropriate such as changing environment, lifestyle of local peoples and learning pressure.
These usually cause health problems, then students are forced to learn how to take care of themselves without their parents. Futhermore, language barrier is a tremendous challenge on the way they communicate and study in their daily lifes. First of all, students have benefited by an advanced education where have good conditions including up-to-day material, modern laboratories, well-stocked library, and well-equipped for practicing.
Besides, it is a particular chance to immerse in a different culture like enjoy special food, traditional dress, and travelling some beautiful spot. Moreover, students also have occasion for self-development to make themselves more independent, responsiable and self-reliant; that are necessary virtue for them to overcome any serious difficulty in the future. (90) In sum, there are certainly studying abroad have both drawbacks and benefits, but it can not be denied that it give students many opportunities to open their mind and develop language skill, career as well as personality.
