* Unless you have a career within the corporate food system, things are not working out for you * Farmers and workers are dying at the market * Consumers are being fed toxins through processed foods * Children are being harmed by the level of diet-related diseases * Consumers are being brainwashed to purchase cheap calories for the pure joy of eating it (no nutritional value) * The way we eat today causes cruelty to animals, demands high levels of energy and water usage, contributes to global warming, limits our compassion, and is controlled by the most powerful people on the planet. Worries about what would happen if we ran into a food shortage brought some to the idea of organic farming.
* The food system is dependent on fossil fuels. The average distance from the farm to the market was 56 miles. This lead to the Green Revolution * The modern food system demands a great amount of water to produce the “laboratory-perfect” growing conditions for foods. * It can take one ton of water to produce one kilo of grain * 7 kilos of that grain is used for each kilo of beef The Green Party in New Zealand has established a campaign for SAFE food * SAFE = sustainably produced, accurately labeled, free from drugs disease and contamination, and ethically marketed * Strives to shift schools away from selling junk food to providing more of a healthier selection of food and drinks.
* The government has been working on listening to the demands of both the producer and the consumer – mainly due to the vulnerability of a terrorist attack on the food system. The government feels that terrorists could easily poison the food that is being shipped to the US and easily get away with it due to the abundant amount of illnesses we already have here in the US * The food system has generated many biological horrors such as Mad Cow disease and the Crreutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. The virus of the Mad Cow Disease entered the food system and cycled from one sick cow to millions.
* The BSE epidemic caused the USDA to raise its standards of inspection and hygiene. * Other diseases include the H5N1 virus (bird flu) The food system has taken many things away from humans, including: dignity, how we must work and live, control over our lives, bodies and self image, the knowledge where our child is born she will be able to have a healthy diet and grow up free of poverty. * Food sovereignty is a vision that aims to address the abuse of the powerless within the food system. * Ex. The women in the global south grow 80% of the food, and yet they own only 2% of the land * Reclaiming control of the food system will be done by efforts from the individual and the collective group.
However, the efforts can range individually to globally. “to change our world we need to change ourselves” * To reform, we must start at the individual level. * Step 1: Transform our tastes: the consumer demand is based on sugar, salt, fat and flesh. “impulse purchases” and snacking are a main reason to our unhealthy diets . We must learn to eat with the seasons, eat foods (non-processed) seasonally to mix up the variety. We also need to make our meals more joyful, not pretentious. Step 2 – Eat Locally and Seasonally: Food that is not grown or treated to survive long-distance travels will ultimately taste better. It will also decrease your carbon footprint. Food is only grown seasonally (for the most part) so stick with the foods of that season to ensure the best quality. * Step 3: Eat Agroecologically : Learn about the local environment that food is grown in and grow it yourself * Step 4: Support Locally Owned Business: Supermarkets may have more variety, but they charge more for less fresh food compared to a locally owned business.
Also, the food in the streets tends to be more healthy because it is less processed. * Step 5: Profound and comprehensive rural change: BIG PICTURE This section wraps up the entire book. The food system is a faulty way of how we obtain the foods we consume. We are being fed toxins because the big corporations want to make a profit. Also, we are harming the animals and the environment due to our current food choices. The Green Party established SAFE to ensure that our food was sustainably produced, accurately labeled, free from drugs, disease and contamination and ethically marketed.
