Sustainable Development in Higher Education Essay

Sustainability in higher education This report is going to determine the sustainability in higher education through address five issues which are population, poverty, environmental degradation democracy, human rights and peace and development, especially in finance discipline.

To begin with discuss the definition of sustainability and sustainable development should be concerned. The paper (IISD 2012) outlines sustainable development (SD) refers to the development that meets human needs and benefits not only for present but also for future generations.Especially, sustainability is widely known in finance area through higher education.

In the case of sustainability in higher education, generally speaking ‘education for sustainability’ (EFS) and ‘education for sustainable development’ (ESD) regards to “the knowledge, skills and values which students are expected to learn” to help them contribute in working place through sustainable ways of living and working(Tilbury, D. , Ryan, A, 2011, pp. 137-150). Gerald, D. Rolf, J & Stephen M (2005) examined the concept of sustainable development strategy. It emphasizes that education can play a important role in “both raising awareness among young people about sustainable development and giving them the skills to put sustainable development into practice”. UNESCO (1997) concludes that education for SD allows every human being to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary to shape a sustainable future.

Based on the information contained in the report, five issues and strategies in financial discipline will be defined as follow. It contains two main points: “the concept of needs, in particular the essential needs of the world’s poor, to which overriding priority should be given; and the idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment’s ability to meet present and future needs”.

With regard to needs and limitations, population, poverty, resources, human rights should be determined. As a starting point, population pressures become a heat issue in the degradation of environments and are increasing most rapidly in recent decade of the world. Moreover, a large amount of population in developing country comes into high pressure of competition. More competitors bring higher sustainability in education in decreasing the probability of getting a job.Therefore, in financial discipline write sustainability report relating to the population to increase awareness to the public. Poverty is a consequence of population growth as well as a serious threat to both human sanctity and sustainable development.

Poverty also contributes to much of violence and war which destroy lives, undermine social and economic progress. In term of poverty in higher education, the awareness should aim at better developed countries and also should focus on individuals whom are living through undeveloped.The strategies of address poverty in finance are that pprovide assignment and case studies to assist students in acquire ability in critically thinking and incentives for change. Additionally, different countries’ economic state should be introduced in class, tutors can help students to analysese why there is poverty in some countries and tell students to know how individual can do in daily life to approach this issue. Rights for Environmental Sustainability (CURES) would be made to poor countries based on their population, per capita income and absolute level of environmental sustainability.This approach differentiates payments and receipts on the basis of income, while rewarding improvements in environmental performance in rich countries, and making greater payments to countries with greater environmental problems.

Human rights and peace investigate eeducation is a fundamental in making better sustainable future. Educated individuals show less gender discrimination in workplace. Build concept of equity between human beings. Peace observes share kindness and happiness between communities and the world. According to R.

However, rich countries acknowledge a special responsibility in terms of supplying technologies and financial resources in the pursuit of SD.
