INTRODUCTION

The world wide fund (WWF) is an international  organization.
It was founded in 1961. It works for the preservation
and conservation of the nature and the reduction of human impact on the
environment. It was first named as world wildlife fund, then later in
1986 it was changed to worldwide fund. The living planet report is published every two years by WWF since 1998. WWF
was formed after first panda named as CHI-CHI was saved and the logo of the
organization is also based on this fact.

It is the world’s
largest conservation organization with over five million supporters worldwide, working
in more than 100 countries, supporting around 1,300 conservation and
environmental projects. WWF is a foundation, with 55% of funding from
individuals and bequests, 19% from government sources (such as the World Bank, US aid) and 8% from
corporations.

The mission of the
organization is “to stop the degradation of the planet’s natural
environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with
nature.”

 WWF basically
concentrates on the conservation of: oceans and coasts, forests, and freshwater ecosystems, and apart
from that it also works for the endangered species, sustainable production of commodities and climate change.

BACKGROUND
‘WWF was started after a trip was made in 1960 by the
renowned British biologist and first General Director of UNESCO, Sir Julian Huxley, who went to East Africa to report about wildlife
conservation. But he observed the wildlife there he was much disappointed and
warned that after 20 years most of the region’s wildlife will disappear. ‘

Next
year in response to his warning, an organization based on the group of
expertise was made to work for the conservation of the nature and wildlife.
This group decided to base its operations in Switzerland.

At
the same time, a panda which was saved and named as Chi-Chi was a widely popular
attraction at the London Zoo so they decided that the logo of the organization
would be based on a panda, which later on was slightly changed many times.

‘And
then, in September 1961, the World Wildlife Fund was officially formed. In
first three years of existence, WWF raised and donated almost $1.9 million to
conservation projects.

    SWOT Analysis:

SWOT analysis is a process which describes the strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities and threats of a organization. This analysis helps organizations
to improve themselves in a market full of competitors.

STRENGTHS

Every organization has some points which are defined as their strengths.
The main thing is to analyze that strengths and make them the weaknesses of
your competitors. Here are some of the strengths of the WWF which were
observed;

Awareness in public

As WWF is a multinational organization, its famous nation widely.
Whenever it taps its customers, WWF required a very few times to introduce
itself. People already knew about the conservational projects of WWF, so they
prompt its educating campaigns by registering themselves and funding the
organization. And for this reason it never needs to struggle very hard to make
a raise in funds.

Well established mechanism

As WWF is working since 1961, it has a well established mechanism. It
works in an environment where everything is organized. For every campaign or project
a timeline is defined and a proper work plan for the projects is discussed
before the stating of the project, which defines the well established mechanism
of the organism.

Strong reputation in market

Due to the reputation of WWF people are eager to work with this
organization. As on the one side people get a chance to educate themselves in
various ways, on the other side by prompting the projects of WWF for the
preservation of our planet, they feel safe. People now understand the positive
impact of this organization on the environment. They have started believing
that now it’s a necessity to start working for our environment to make it a
living planet for our coming generations. This is the reason that WWF has a
very strong reputation in market.

Good customer value

From many years WWF works with so many schools, universities, companies
and partners and most of its customers are satisfied with the organization and
they are eagerly willing to work again with WWF. Even some of the customers are
now prompting the relationship with WWF by working together for the nature
conservational programs.

Same target market

The target market for most of the campaigns and projects of WWF is same.
It always tries to tap more people and aware them also but usually their target
market is same. And for this reason it needs fewer struggles to attain the
attention of the market for gathering funds and meeting their target value. They
also need less resources and less energy to conveyance people.

Weaknesses

Weaknesses define the weak point of any organization which they need to
analyze first and then improve, in order to sustain their market position. Some
of the observed weaknesses of WWF are mentioned below;

Inflexible working hours

WWF is a target oriented organization which means that employees are
given with a target and they have to meet them before a deadline. In some cases
if they are unable to meet their target, their salaries are deducted. While
working in WWF employees get to know that there is a work load in organization
but still there are some days which are extremely relaxing for them. In working
days sometimes employees don’t get a chance to have their lunch on time. But
usually between the closing of one campaign and starting the other campaign
there are some days with approximately no work load. In these days employees
should be relaxed for their inflexible working hours in order to make them more
productive in extremely working days.

Time constraint

While working for the department of ‘Spellathon’ of WWF, I observed that
the work load which consists of meetings and follow up calls to various schools
was between 9 am to 2 pm because after that the off time of mostly schools
starts. But the lunch break for the employees is from 12:30 to 1:15 which
ruined the important 45 minutes of the working hours. A slight shift in the
lunch time can improve the work system. It also happens that sometimes when
employees are on field work they have to sacrifice their lunch break which
makes them less productive towards work.

Limited resources

It happens in WWF that sometimes employees set a meeting with specific
school or college but due to the limited resources of transport they need to
cancel their meeting and set up a new one on some other day. This gives a
negative impact of the organization.

And in some cases things are not managed in proper ways that at the end
there is a shortage in inventory for a while which affects the supply.

Lack of proper work plan

There is a lack of proper work plan in departments. Instead of dividing
the work in all the team members, everybody keeps on doing what is needed at
that time, which sometimes makes hurdle in completing the tasks.

Opportunities

Opportunities are those plus points which any organization gets from
external environment. These opportunities help in growth of the organization.

Grant from government and other sectors

As WWF works for the betterment of the whole planet it gets grants and
aids from all over the world which is making this organization stronger day by
day.

85% of WWF’s spending is
directed to worldwide conservation activities

New potential customers

With every coming day people are realizing the shortage of resources and
noticing that there is a need of education that how the remaining resources can
be utilized at their maximum level. And for this reason they are becoming the
part of such organizations like WWF. With the help of such potential customers
WWF has done much remarkable work which also includes the saving of many
endangered species. This awareness is increasing the customers of WWF.

Partnership

By becoming the partners with WWF many of the organizations are helping
WWF in many aspects either by giving funds or by giving places for the
plantation or other purposes. These partnerships are strengthening the
organization day by day.

Threats

Things with are hurdle in progress of an organization from externally
sources are threats.

Financial limitations

As WWF raise its fund on its own, it has some financial limitations.
There are so many areas and fields which are needed to be work on and we have
very limited resources left. Although it is working on so many projects and
results are getting better day by day but still there are certain areas which
are deprived of the required attention because of the limited financial
resources.

Climate changing

As WWF works for the conservation and preservation of our planet,
negative climate changing is threatening for the working of the organization.
Due to global warming many things are changing day by day. These consequences include habitat loss, shifts in climatic
conditions and many more things. These changing are alarming for WWF as they
have to increase their struggles day after day with the same limited resources.

Losing funding resources

1.    Sometimes WWF don’t meet the required target for fund raising which
is threatening for the working mechanism of the organization. Losing fund
resources gives a negative impact on the conservational projects.

                                                        PEST
ANALYSIS

PEST is
an external environmental analysis of the companies. P.E.S.T. is an acronym for
the Political, Economic, Social, and Technological factors. These external
factors most of the time is beyond the firm’s control and are considered as
threats but some other times they can also create new opportunities.

Political factors

Political factors enforce
any organization to work in such a lawful manner that it is under no obligation
from government. As WWF receives its some funds from the public sector, it
means that some of its financial resources are affected by political decisions.
As WWF is a multinational company it has to follow the terms and policies according
to the government of the country in which they are working.

Environmental factors

Environmental factors include inflation rate and increasing labor cost like
issues. As this organization has to raise funds it is deeply concerned about
the economy of the country. Sources of income such as donations from corporate
and public sector represent a big percentage of WWF’s revenue. Therefore, WWF
funding can be considerably affected according to the economic cycle of a
country. But in some cases a crisis in economy of the country can increase the
number of donations.

Social factors

WWF works in more than
100 countries and in every country the social factors and behaviors of people
are different according to their culture and religion so social factors affect
this organization in many ways. It has to create such a relationship with its
customers in whom they can feel comfortable, to make a remarkable progress.
Other religious and cultural aspects are also points of concern while working
in 100 different countries. Demographic variable is also included in social
factor. By increasing population more educating programs are need to be spread
in order to aware nation to consume the left resources very wisely.

Technological factors

The changing in
technologies may help in many aspects but on the other hand it is also a burden
on cost.

But with the usage of modified instruments WWF
is saving environment more often. And through different experiments limited
resources are utilized at their maximum. On the other hand recycling and
reusing techniques are being used now. New innovational techniques are
introduced to farmers. Such plants which absorb water supplies from earth are
not appreciated by WWF; only plants which help in nature conservation are being
planted. All these factors are known by the support of technological
experiments.
