“Tehlikeli Oyunlar” isthe story of a Turkish intellectual suffocated by social conventions, theinstitution of marriage and fruitless attempts at love. O?uz Atay achievedputting himself among modernist and post-modernist Turkish literatureprecursor. O?uz Atay revolts against to highbrows’ desperation abouttraditional social and political institution and backwardness of public with ahuge responsibility and guilt feelings. In Tehlikeli Oyunlar, the tatteredconsciousness of Hikmet Benol, the novel’s narrator and main character, unfoldsthroughout the novel. The desperation of an intellectual living in a thirdworld country is portrayed in the personality of Hikmet Benol, with all itsdilemmas, impossibilities and delirium.
Oguz Atay uses a stream ofconsciousness technique throughout the novel and in using its limited butextraordinary options, he creates a unique brand of humour. In Tehlikeli Oyunlar, the relationshipbetween the intellectuals and the army is shown by the enforced closenessbetween Hikmet Benol and Colonel Husamettin Tanbay, a relationship whichinvolves an absolute absence of dialog. There is always a constant bickeringand deafness, but there is also the need to stand side-by-side. Besides thesedualities, the overall dominant message of the novel is to struggle with and tomake an effort to better oneself.
With its dynamic language, strong literarystructure and humour of desperation, Tehlikeli Oyunlar can also be read as apersonal ‘Encyclopaedia of Turkey’ built on the contradictions betweenintellectuals and the army, the shanty and the city, individuals and society. “Tehlikeli Oyunlar” must be read calmly. It includes stories that independent of each other. The book tells a person(Hikmet Benol) is mixed up in an affair.
A man who mixed up in pages, twowomen; Sevgi and Bilge. The book is a insurrection to fakeluminaries in its period. When Hikmet Benol criticizes himself, he castigatesfake good people cynically: “Fakat ülkemizde en çok yeti?en köylüdür. Köylü,bütün iklimlerde yeti?ir. Köylünün yeti?mesi için çok emek verme?e ihtiyaçyoktur… Biz köylüleri çok severiz. ?ehre gelirlerse onlardan kap?c? ve ameleyapar?z…” (60) In my opinion, it is a confusing book.Dialogs, monologues, effects, reactions… they are all together.
It also haspessimistic construction. It is hard to understand. The book is like a deepwell and pulls people in itself. But there is a problem; “Tehlikeli Oyunlar”pulls people in its darkness. It has amazing sentences, oneiromancy and themost important is words words words.
“Çünkü albay?m kelimeler baz? anlamlaragelmiyor.” “Çünkü albay?m, her dü?ünce mutlu olmuyor.”(160) “Hay?r, kelimeler aldat?c?yd?; kelimeler, bizigerçeklerden uzakla?t?ran küçük tuzaklard?.”(210) SYNOPSIS In “TehlikeliOyunlar”, one of the most important Turkish novel of the 20th Century, O?uzAtay uses different narrative forms (dialogue, monologue, lettres, poems, diary…) for to extend their limits of story telling possibilities. Hikmet’sunintelligibility in hope of intelligibility shows up: suicide. Even if we knowthat the author does not commit suicide, these sentence in the novel arethought-provoking:”Yazar ölmekistedi?inde roman?nda birileri kendini asar ayn? sebeplerden.” (352)”De?il mi albay?m?Allah belan? versin Hikmet! Sen anlamazs?n tabii.
Anlamak için insan?n baz?eksik yönleri olmal?.”(140)THEMES/ MOTIVES / SYMBOLS OguzAtay’s novel “Tehlikeli Oyunlar” is different from other novels thatcover the suicide theme. There is a huge gap between the process ofenlightenment of his heroes who commit suicide and the processin Turkey. They,as Turkish intellectuals who approach Western modernist thought, see steadfastness against the change in their own society. Therefore they began tocriticize the situation they have been by irony. The conflictfinally bringsdepression and they commit suicide for ontological reasons. These works inwhich reality is discussed by irony in Turkish novel, analyse the suicide themeby bringing it onto necessaryground in terms of structure and composition.
“Bununla birlikte albay?m, her ?eye ra?menalbay?m, ne pahas?na olursa olsun albay?m ?st?raplar?mla birlikte gömülme?eraz? olamad???m için, her insan?n yapt??? gibi çocuk ?eklinde, oyun ?eklinde, yaz? ?eklinde, itiraf ?eklinde, suç ?eklinde, oyun ?eklinde kendimden geriyebir ?eyler b?rakmaktan kaç?namayaca??m için bu sözlere boyun e?iyorum. Dünyayayeni bir örnek getirmek istedi?im halde, tek ba??ma bunu ba?aramad???m için,insanlar? pe?imden sürükleme?e çal??aca??m. Yaln?z idam edilmeden önce birsigara yakmak istiyorum.
” (331) There is a relationship between O?uzAtay’s Tehlikeli Oyunlar Dangerous Games and Renaissance literature. During theRenaissance, folly was a major theme in literature and many writers of the timehad fool characters in their works. In Tehlikeli Oyunlar, O?uz Atay placed itsfool-like character Hikmet Benol in a state where Hikmet seems to shiftcontinuously between a state of folly and sanity. Tehlikeli Oyunlar which is one of the mostimportant novels of Oguz Atay was written in 1973. The novel that has variousclues about the period it was written comes into prominence with the techniqueof game within the game, intertwined time comprehension and the diversity innarration layers. The narrator of the text prepares different language gamesfor readers and by doing this s/he enhances vagueness and complexity of thetext. The novel consists of four main parts and eighteen subparts.
This partialstructure supports an uncanny atmosphere that can be analyzed with cooperationof “representative reader”.CRITICALREADING Animportant move of O?uz Atay, in his novel Tehlikeli Oyunlar is his turningattention to the intellectual questions of Turkey and the dilemma ofinstitution of authorship through the type of “the disconnected” who is overcomeby his emotional contradictions but also ventures to come to terms with himselfor herself. In the first part of this thesis, in order to reveal thefoundational bases of O?uz Atay’s fictional subjects, I apply to Jean-Gabriel deTarde’s understanding of society as the determiner rules of movement of inter –mentalities, called micro-sociology, instead of Émile Durkheim’s sociology. In that respect,it is argued that O?uz Atay constructs the subject not as the representative ofthe given discourses and ideologies produced in accordance with readyformulations, convictions, and abstractions but rather as social types with apotential of intentional emotionality. I employ the tools of psychoanalyticalmethod developed by Jacques Lacan to analyse the question of meaning andrepresentation of the subject and language. Tehlikeli Oyunlar includes many monologueand criticism like author’s other novels. Actually, this monologues are amatter of in O?uz Atay’s novels, not a ordinary fiction.
Hikmet, the majorcharacter of novel, queries life, also kidding with it and gets desperate aboutlife. The novel is sometimes schizophrenic, sometimes humorous, always internalfeud. Also, in this novel, author’s novels take part.
Each reader infersdifferent meaning from the novel. It’s reason that the novel has eidetic andhumorous image. The major character of novel, Hikmet, commits suicide becauseof existential crisis.
