The best form of government Essay

The best form of government

Today, many forms of government exist like monarchy, anarchism, democracy, republic, dictatorship, oligarchy, autocracy and many such forms. But according to me the best form of government is democracy. Democracy is a form of government in which state-power is held by the majority of citizens within a country or a state

There are two principles that any definition of democracy includes. The first principle is that all members of the society (citizens) have equal access to power and the second that all members (citizens) enjoy universally recognized freedoms and liberties.

There are several varieties of democracy, some of which provide better representation and more freedoms for their citizens than others. However, if any democracy is not carefully legislated to avoid an uneven distribution of political power with balances, such as the separation of power, then a branch of the system of rule could accumulate power and become harmful to the democracy itself.. An essential process in representative democracies are competitive elections, that are fair both substantively and procedurally. Furthermore, freedom of political expression, freedom of speech, and freedom of press are essential so that citizens are informed and able to vote in their personal interests.

Popular sovereignty is common but not a universal motivating philosophy for establishing a democracy. In some countries, democracy is based on the philosophical principle of equal rights. Many people use the term “democracy” as shorthand for liberal democracy, which may include additional elements such as political, equality before the law, the right to petition elected officials for redress of grievances, due process, civil liberties, human rights, and elements of civil society outside the government. In the United States, separation of powers is often cited as a supporting attribute, but in other countries, such as the United Kingdom, the dominant philosophy is parliamentary sovereignty (though in practice judicial independence is generally maintained). In other cases, “democracy” is used to mean direct democracy.

Democracy has its origins in Ancient Greece. However other cultures have significantly contributed to the evolution of democracy such as Ancient India, today India is the world’s largest democracy, Ancient Rome, Europe, and North and South America. Democracy has been called the “last form of government” and has spread considerably across the globe.

Some people criticise democracy and feel it is synonymous with corruption and red tapeism but then no form of government is perfect or without flaws. It actually depends on the citizens of the country.

The “majority rule” is often described as a characteristic feature of democracy, but without responsible government it is possible for the rights of a minority to be abused by the “tyranny of the minority”. Hence the role of the citizens becomes very important in a democracy. If they exercise their right to vote and choose the right people to govern them then nothing can be better than a democratic system.

Democracy is the only form of government where the citizens get the right to choose their leaders and have the freedom of expression. In a democracy, the citizens are not ruled over but led by the politicians in true sense. A person living in a democratic secular state experiences freedom in true sense.

If the analyse the basic human nature, the preliminary thing that we realise is that humans want to be free in all respects. Not even kids like to be told what to do. We like to take our own decisions and follow our own instincts. We want that the path we tread should be chosen by us and we do not like any kind of interference.

And freedom is the foundation of democracy. The citizens in a democracy are not only free to express themselves or do what they want but they also have a right to choose their leaders. The people in a secular state can follow any religion they want to and live their lives the way they like. Democracy, essentially, is form of government which is of the people, by the people and for the people.

Also, the leaders know that to be elected again they need to fulfil all the promises they made to the voters. Hence, to keep their vote bank, the leaders do as they say and so the country progress under a democratic rule.

This kind of freedom is not granted by any other kind of government. In democracy, u don’t have to belong to a royal family to be able to join political party. Nor do u have to be rich. If you have the support of the people, which you can get if you work for the nation and promise to help in the progress of the nation, you can be a part of the government.

We all know that to a man nothing is as precious as his freedom. Dreams, aspirations, and ideals mean nothing if he does not have the freedom to pursue them. The secret to happiness is freedom and it is basic human nature to strive to be happy.

And democracy is certainly a step towards happiness because democracy is synonymous with freedom.
