The big bang theory is a scientific explanation about how the world was formed. According to Edwin Hubble observed that the galaxies which were outside the Milky Way were moving apart from each other. Hubble theorized that there was a time when the universe existed at a specific place in space. The concentration of all the components of the universe at a singular point led to an event which Hubble termed to be the big bang. The world according to Hubble was a single unit which later on expanded to a cosmos observed today 13.8 billion years later. According to Hubble the earth as observed today was as a result of it being ripped away from other bodies after the explosion and developing over the years to form features that would support life. The earth has regenerated and developed over the years allowing for humans to live in it as well as study other heavenly bodies. According to Hubble the heavenly bodies that were previously viewed as clouds and gases in the far distance of the Milky Way were actually galaxies. The big bang theory has had support from existing scientific evidence such as the cosmic background radiation and red shifts. There are also issues and elements that do not support the big bang theory such as lack of universal galactic uniformity, absence of dark matter and energy, oldness problem as well as the law of thermodynamics. The big bang theory aims at explaining how the world was formed and Hubble relies on calculations and mathematics to indicate how the explosion occurred leading to the formation of the galaxy as it is observed today.
Hubble observed that the galaxy existed as a unit several years ago and it existed as such for a long time, however by observing the distance between the galaxies, Hubble believes that there was an explosion which occurred leading the galaxies to exist in different spaces. The explosion led to the scattering of the bodies and the universe was left in its own sphere to allow for development. After the explosion, the universe began to expand and develop features which would enable it to support life ( Durrer ). The temperature of the universe after the explosion was 10 billion degrees Fahrenheit. Moreover, the universe consisted of protons, neutrons and electrons. All these components decayed years after wards as the universe became cooler.
The big bang theory rests upon two evidences which include; the cosmic background radiation and the red shifts. The cosmic background radiation is a background radiation which is fills the spaces between the stars. When an individual observes the stars using an optical telescope it is hard to notice the background noise between the stars, however when one utilizes a radio telescope which is sensitive to all the noises in the universe it is possible to notice the glow or the background noise which is connected to the any galaxy as well as other heavenly bodies ( Schild ). The existence of the cosmic background radiation supports the idea that Hubble had that a big bang did occur leading to the development of the universe. The Cosmic background radiation also known as the cosmic microwave background is an electromagnetic radiation which remained after the occurrence of the big bang ( Davies ).
The cosmic background indicates that before the formation of the universe, the matter that surrounded the universe was denser and hotter. There was also a surrounding white fog which was made of hydrogen plasma. Due to the expansion of the universe, the radiation which was part of filling the universe as well as the plasma became cooler. When it was cold enough, the protons, and the electrons which were filling the universe came together to form the neutral hydrogen atoms ( Durrer ). As a result of the formation of the new atoms thermal radiation became hard to absorb thus leading the world to become transparent unlike in the past when electrons and protons existed making the universe opaque.
The cosmic microwave background is one of the researched areas by NASA and other scientific bodies while trying to understand its origin and the period that it has been in existence. The study of CMB indicates that the world has been in existence for billions of years. The glow that shines through the universe at night associated to the different bodies indicates that the world has continued to evolve and expand over the years ( Schild ). The afterglow which has come to be termed as cosmic microwave background is an indication that the big bang did occur resulting to the development of the universe.
Red shift is another ideology that supports the big bang theory. When the appearance of a galaxy is observed from a far the light which one observes appears longer and leaning towards the red end. The wavelength of a galaxy stretches to the red end as it is observed from afar ( Schild ). There are several colors that form a wave length and it is the ability of a galaxy to move towards the red end as one observes it from a distance that makes one believe that the big bang did occur.
The big bang theory claims that the universe began from one central point then expanded to the current form. The expansion also led to other galaxies pulling away and exists in their space ( Gorbunov and Rubakov ). The further away a galaxy is from the universe the more it is red shifted. The red shifted galaxies thus tell us that they are moving further away as years pass by thus making the big bang theory probable.
On the other hand there exist critics of the big bang theory who believe that the explosion never occurred. By basing their theory on their understanding of mathematics and physics, these critics believe that there was no probable way that the big bang could have occurred without fulfilling the aspects of physics as well as chemistry. One of the flaws of the big bang theory is entropy. According to the second law of thermodynamics matter has a tendency to move towards disorder. Therefore, if the big bang theory did occur the galaxies should not have moved to disorder but rather to order ( Gorbunov and Rubakov ). According to entropy if the big bang did occur the elements that would be in existence would be particles which would be spread all over the universe. It would have been hard for the matters which were spread all over the universe to form planets and other complex matters without applying the law of physics ( Keranen ). The universe would not be formed and other heavenly bodies out of nothing. To state that the big bang theory did occur is to state that the second law of thermodynamics is false which is not true.
Moreover, the dark matter and dark energy have not been proven over the years. The unknown has never been proven in physics. Physicians have not been able to prove the unknown since it is hard to study. Theory relies on dark matter and dark energy; it was hard for Hubble to discern what had happened thus leading him to come up with a theory which would help explain what had happened prior to the existence of the universe ( Schild ). The occurrence of the big bang theory would have been probable if dark matter and dark energy were present in the universe.
Also, the lack of universal galactic uniformity indicates that the big bang theory is not correct. The galaxies exist in a spread out and unequal way and at some points the galaxies are close together with the presence of heavy walls and gaps. The universe is said to have been in existence for 13.8 billion years only and this is not a long period to allow for the formation of such walls and gaps ( Schild ). If the concept of the big bang theory is correct, the galaxies would be evenly spread out and the walls that are present could not be so well formed and developed. Therefore the lack of uniformity in the galaxies indicates that the big bang proposed by Hubble did not occur.
The big bang theory is a concept that tries to explain the origin and development of the universe. The concept which was developed by Hubble indicates that the universe existed at a single point and it is after an explosion occurred that the universe and other galaxies were formed. The cosmic microwave background is one of the aspects that support the big bang theory. Red shift is also another source of evidence that support the big bang theory. However, there are critics that find flaws in the big bang theory. One of the flaws of the big bang theory is the lack of galactic uniformity. Moreover, the absence of dark matter and dark energy puts the concept of big bang theory into question.
