The Great Debate
Contemporary society has done enough for the legacies of historical globalization. The legacies of historical globalization is an important issue and many people believe that more can be done, but others feel that contemporary society has done its part. Contemporary society has sent many different kinds of relief to third world countries and there are also many organizations out there that are dedicated to helping people who are suffering from poverty. Contemporary society has also provided much technology to third world countries to improve themselves. Their obligation to help other countries has been fulfilled, contemporary society has responded to the legacies of historical globalization positively.
Contemporary society has sent many different kinds of relief to third world countries to help solve their problems such as poverty and war. There are many organizations dedicated to cut the hunger and poverty nationally and internationally. Nationally, there are organizations such as such as Campaign 2000. Campaign 2000 is a public education movement committed to eliminating child poverty in Canada and raising awareness about it. Internationally, there are organizations such as “Make Poverty History” campaign that fights against poverty and helps people to take action. Even celebrities have been contributing. Some hold benefit concerts to raise money and awareness for poverty. In 2005 Bono organized Live 8, a campaign to increase the fight to eradicate poverty in 3rd world countries. Other celebrities donate large amounts of money to charities dealing with poverty. We as citizens can easily find a way to include ourselves in the fight of poverty. Sites such as face book advertise organizations and even a site that if you play a game the advertisers donate 10 grains of rice to the UN’s world food program. Contemporary society have and continue to help out the third world countries with their legacies of historical globalization.
Contemporary society is also helping out countries that are suffering from war. An example of a legacy of historical globalization is the conflict that is occurring in Darfur right now. No fewer than 200,000 have died and some even call what is happening genocide. However, groups such as Amnesty International and the International Crisis Group have been trying to draw attention to the human rights abuses and is trying to end this conflict. The UN have also been sending peacekeeping assessment teams and military forces to countries that lack effective enforcement. The UN also deployed around 7,000 troops to Darfur to help keep the peace and try to settle conflicts. Contemporary society respond to conflicts and arguments among other countries as best as they can.
Contemporary society have also been helping to technologize and stabilize third world countries, so that they can get back on their feet and end poverty and other legacies of historical globalization. Ripple Africa is a charity in Africa whose mission is to improve the standard of education and healthcare and to create opportunities for the local community there so that they’ll be able to get themselves out of the state of poverty. “Camara” is a charity that takes in second hand computers, and sends them to Africa to teach computer literacy and basic computer technology. Contemporary society is giving more opportunities to technologize themselves and make it easier for them to get out of the state of poverty.
In summary I believe that contemporary society has done enough to respond to the legacies of globalization. They’ve set up many organizations to stop poverty and to stop the war and conflict. Celebrities and citizens alike are both getting involved in their community and society to raise awareness. The government and United Nations are trying their best to peace keep in countries where there are arguments and violence. Organizations and companies are helping to technologize Africa and other places around the world that are part of the digital divide. To conclude, I believe that contemporary society has responded greatly to the legacies of globalization.
