It has been the very interest of education that has paved the way for the development of language instruction and medium in the United States. It is with these that the country sought to achieve the aim of equalizing and redefining the way instruction is facilitated. In the end, the numerous events in history, the landmarks in which these actions has been facilitated remains to be hard and difficult. The article of DomNwachukwu gives readers insight about the developments and trends towards language development in American history and how it has been vital in what the United States enjoys today. Similarly, he also focused on the way it also has influenced California as a state. He sought to showcase the diverse and rich background as to where the idea of America being multicultural was formed. By paying close attention to these changes, one can appreciate and cultivate their understanding of these groups, individuals and events (DomNwachukwu, p.
1.). He first mentions the development of language and cultures prior to colonial times. Prior to the first involvement of Western Europe, there have been many tribes and cultures that had inhabited and existed in the land. DomNwachukwu argues that “these original Americans were made up of different ethnic groups, different languages and different cultures and worldviews, (p.1). After the formal entry of colonizers in America, they had introduced the use of English as a medium of communication and instruction among natives and students. Though the English language was not really a native dialect among Americans, it was used and modified it to serve their purpose.
With this, it enabled many natives to embrace the idea of creating a single and unified way of communicating with other people. However, as the years passed, there have been an increasing number of immigrants in the United States. The barriers of language became a problem especially for non-native speakers. As the issue became increasingly high, there has been an initiative to comprise educational objectives using dual modes of transmission. This proposal stirred various interests as the nation was split as to whether or not they shall allow the kind of setup.
Before this was even realized there were laws that geared towards a mono-cultural and monolingual America (DomNwachukwu, p.4). These restrictions were very focused on preserving American English and letting immigrants learn the language. Though there were little changes that happened during the period of 18th -19th century, a remarkable event transpired during the middle of the 20th century. The article highlights the Supreme Courts decision to favor a minority group wherein the facilitation of education was not determined by either race or ethnicity. The case of Brown v.
Board of Education became a symbolic as these people were recognized to have the same rights as their fellow native speakers. (DomNwachukwu, p.7). With this spark, it spurred the creation of the Civil Rights movement and other battle victories for minorities in their claim of equal facilitation and instruction.
The article provides several case victories and legislative amendments to help reconcile and bridge the gap between native and non-native speakers. Several states have stood for the clamor of bi-lingual education and sought to create amendments in the current system. It shall reinforce accountability and responsibility by every educational institution to supplement and enhance the way these objectives are met. In the end, as people and American society embrace the challenges in these times, it continues to promote a level assurance among immigrants and natives that it is a country who promotes freedom, equality and democracy. There must continuously be a balance between objectives as each one deciphers the appropriate actions that are needed during this time.
