The Importance of Maintaining a Strong Social Fabric Though most cultures have undoubtedly high regard to family and friends, the value is stronger in most Asian countries.
Amid fast paced technological development and industrialization, Asians still continue to value relationships among community. This is not to say that Westerners particularly Americans do not give value to the importance of community but they give higher importance to individuality and development of the individual self to contribute to the development of the society; while on the other side of the world, the community shapes the holistic development of the individual. Distinct to Asian cultures is the community structures where the family is a basic unit and inside the family, each individual is a unit. Most Asian cultures are very particular when it comes to calling people by their names and title. When someone is older, there are certain words or title to call them or associated with them, not first name basis like in America. This kind of cultural tradition weaves the relationship a community into one strong social fabric.
The Individual and the Community The community is likened into a fabric where every thread is important in keeping the whole together; thus the existence and totality of an individual conforms to the norms by the society. Though individuality is respected in the concept of freedom, it is encouraged that the growth of an individual is interwoven with the wholeness of the society. Chinese philosopher Confucius stresses that the fulfillment of the roles of a community precede over individuality; meaning, individuality can be denied for the good of a community. For example, Americans is very particular in the development of the self in the expense of the society. It doesn’t matter whether many people may be sacrificed only to uphold the rights of the individual. It doesn’t matter whether parents would be hurt only to set free their children to fulfill the future they want themselves to pursue.
The consequence of promoting so much the individuality of person is the capability or on the other side, incapability to do the right or the wrong thing. More often than not, the freedom of exploring the individuality drives people to result into drug addiction, depression and domestic violence — things and situations that individuals need to help of the community for proper solution; but are rarely involved because of the perception that they have every right to do whatever they want for themselves.Advantages of Communal Life If seen in a macro level, there are much advantage of a communal life and maintained social fabric compared to the promotion of individualism.
A healthy society values each individual as vital part of the weave. In this concept, each individual is accountable to a collective whether family, friends or even the entire community to what he or she becomes. The individual is raised in a way that in the future he or she will contribute to the wholistic development of the community. Through maintaining strong social fabric, it is unlikely that individuals will fall astray into social ills like drug addiction, depression, suicide and domestic violence. This is for the reason that the eyes of the community is watching each individual because they believe that many will be affected whenever one has taken a path the is contrary to the norms of the society. In many surveys, more and more Americans are taking suicide because of depression while Asians have greater tolerance to such problems because of the presence of a caring community. Individuals are woven into relationships and into a greater community which allows them to explore who they are as individuals and at the same time protect the rights and privileges of the community where they belong.Works Cited Berling, Judith A.
