The
Group is committed to comply with the environmental laws and regulations of the
jurisdictions where we operate, and are in the process of setting performance
standards for the sites where we operate. In 2017, there were no cases of
environmental violations. Our sites are subject to strict internal and external
scrutiny to verify full adherence to local and our own internal standards. Our properties
are routinely inspected by staff to ensure that they are in compliance with
applicable environmental laws and regulations.

Future
Steps

As a
company that supplies and distributes products to our customers, we contribute
to the consumption of resources. We also cause CO? emissions
when we transport, store and deliver our products, as well as at our
admin­is­trative offices and workshops where we service our vehicles.

 

The
Group believes that using materials responsibly is essential to providing environmentally
responsible goods and services. In view of this, we monitor closely material
consumption to ensure sustainable provisioning.

 

Various
programmes will be introduced in 2018 to reduce waste sent to landfills. There
are plans to adopt a tiered approach to waste management, from managing the waste
generated from daily operations to prioritizing waste avoidance, reuse and
recycling. This is in line with “Sustainable Singapore Blueprint 2015”,
where Singapore is working towards waste management and reduction targets
in becoming a Zero Waste Nation.

 

 

Occupational Health and Safety

 

We
prioritize providing safe and healthy work environments and have made considerable
efforts to manage the inherent risks in our operations. The efforts for the
prevention of workplace accidents are an essential component of operational
activities for Union Gas Holdings. According to a 2017 report by Workplace Safety
and Health Institute, Singapore1, the top
3 incident types for major injuries in the transportation and storage sector
are slips, trips and falls, work related traffic incidents, and over-exertion /
strenuous exercise. The leading occupational diseases are work-related
musculoskeletal disorders, noise induced deafness and occupational skin
diseases.

 

Appropriate
preventive measures have kept the Group’s accident severity rate and accident
frequency rate at 0. Union Gas employees who are involved in the delivery of
LPG cylinders to our business and residential customers are all provided with personal
protective equipment such as safety boots and impact gloves. All our drivers
also hold a HAZMAT Transport Driver Permit, which is a requirement by Singapore
Civil Defence Force (SCDF) in order to transport and handle LPG cylinders. New
workers undergo a buddy system and are trained by the more experienced, senior
workers on how to work safely and how to load and unload the cylinders safely
using our Euro 5 lorries before they are deployed to work on their own on. All
our Euro 5 lorries are also equipped with a platform to facilitate ease of
transfer of cylinders from the storage area onto the lorries.

 

Our Occupational Health and Safety Committee oversees health and safety performance for the Group. At the operational
level, employees are trained in safe working practices and to understand
emergency response preparedness and procedures. Other initiatives include
regular evacuation drills and site inspections.
